About this listen

Casey Duncan is a homicide detective with a secret: When she was in college, she killed a man. She was never caught, but he was the grandson of a mobster, and she knows that someday this crime will catch up to her.

Casey's best friend, Diana, is on the run from a violent, abusive ex-husband. When Diana's husband finds her, and Casey herself is attacked shortly after, Casey knows it's time for the two of them to disappear again.

Diana has heard of a town made for people like her, a town that takes in people on the run who want to shed their old lives. You must apply to live in Rockton, and if you're accepted it means walking away entirely from your old life and living off the grid in the wilds of Canada: no cell phones, no Internet, no mail, no computers, very little electricity, and no way of getting in or out without the town council's approval.

As a murderer Casey isn't a good candidate, but she has something they want: She's a homicide detective, and Rockton has just had its first real murder. She and Diana are in. However, soon after arriving, Casey realizes that the identity of a murderer isn't the only secret Rockton is hiding - in fact she starts to wonder if she and Diana might be in even more danger in Rockton than they were in their old lives.

An edgy, gripping crime audiobook from best-selling urban fantasy writer Kelley Armstrong, City of the Lost boldly announces a major new player in the crime fiction world.

Amazing

This was one of those books where I would intentionally stop listening because I didn't want it to end, and I needed to wait for my next round of credits! :D The pacing is just right, slow enough for proper character development, but fast enough to keep you interested, and sometimes on the edge of your seat.

I love the characters, genuinely cared about their stories, and where the story might lead them. The ending was not predictable for me. I immediately started on book 2 in the series. I am so happy to have found this series, I am so excited there are several more books to look forward to!

My only criticism would be the author goes between using the sheriff and deputy first name or last name. Some times the sheriff will be called Eric, other times, Dalton and the deputy Will or Anders (sp?) which made it a little confusing to follow sometimes, but with the help of Therese INCREDIBLE narration, I eventually came to identify who is talking/ being talked about quickly.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND

wow awesome

loving this author, I knew this book would be great. It was slow to interest me at first so I tried again. Soon I was hooked and listened to the end, wanting more. I hope there is a sequel ASAP. Great read so don't hesitate to spend your credit.

great book but one fatal flaw

the only reason I'm giving four stars instead of 5 is because the female lead blames herself for the obvious stuff that's not her fault like so many books in the genre and it makes me insane other than that great book great story great characters

Totally Engrossing

I do not normally enjoy police procedurals or thrillers. They tend to make me too tense or fill my head with images that I cannot get over. But the writing is so strong and compelling, I couldn't put this down. I love the idea of a remote town used as a refuge. But once again, the story telling seals the deal.

Absolutely loved it

I love everything I’ve read by Kelley Armstrong but was super excited to see this series of hers not in PNR. I was so immersed in the story that I finished it in one day. It’s been a long time since any book has hooked me so hard. I love the characters and the city. Can’t wait to dive in to book 2 and see where the story takes us next.

Love This Series

I'm pretty hard to please when it comes to books. If you don't capture my attention within the first hour of listening I'm getting my credit back but this book did not fail me. It is well written and entertaining. And the romantic build up between the two characters doesn't overtake the real story which is the thriller mystery aspect. I was actually a little creeped out and on the edge of my seat when she described one of the killings that happened. I rarely get so caught up in a story that it affects me in that way but this did, which says a lot. I actually finished this book in 3 days. Couldn't stop listening.

The narrator does a fabulous job with the different voices (women do so much better with male voices than men do with women's). The sexy voice she does for Eric's character has me totally crushing on him... Geez, in some weird way, does that make me a lesbian??? JK. Anyway, love the way she portray's everyone's voices, men and woman a like.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a good series. I'm half way through the 2nd book and it's still holding up.

Loved It

I bought this audio book because Therese Plummer was the narrator and she is one of my favorites. I am so glad I did because now I have a new author to look for. This book has everything - suspense, mystery and just the right amount of romance. A note of caution: the language might offend some readers.

LOVE IT

I love this storyline. I think it would make for an awesome movie. The last series made me consider not proceeding with future books, I really struggled to get through it all. This one won me back over!

Great Story

In spite of it being a little gruesome, I thoroughly enjoyed the book. Loved the characters and I wasn't quite ready for the book to end. I'm glad this is a series. Great plot and character development, a little romance, intrigue and a whole lot of suspense. As to the narration - there is no one better than Therese Plummer. She can make a bad book tolerable, a mediocre book better and a good book great. Wish Audible could find a couple dozen more narrators as good.

Looking forward to Book #2 in the series.
