Publisher's summary

A healing touch. A hideous face. A looming curse.

As the ugly twin to a perfect sister, Princess Laidra lives her life in the shadows - until her parents offer her as bait for a giant serpent.

Her escape attempt leaves her shipwrecked on a secluded island with only one inhabitant: Prince Calen, who lives under a curse. If anyone looks upon him, he turns into a giant serpent. Speaking to him in the darkness, Laidra sees past the monster to Calen’s lonely soul, and she determines to free him from the magic’s hold.

But if Laidra can’t break the curse in time, Calen will become a mindless creature of scales and fangs forever.

A YA mythology/romance that retells the myth of Eros and Psyche with adventure, magic, and true love.

Great story; mediocre performance

I found the narration monotone, sleepy, and annoyingly grating for the male voices.

Good story, though. I've been bingeing H.L. Burke for a few days and really enjoying her other stories, read by other narrators.

Not beauty, and the snake.

Coiled by H.L. Burke is a standalone retelling of the Greek story about Eros and Psyche. Only as an H.L. Burke book it far surpasses the original in terms of both readability and theme.

In the original story Psyche is expected to visit her husband in the dark with no explanation.

In Coiled: Laidra has no choice when her family decides to send her away to lure out a great serpent. She knows she won't be missed. when she isn't being reviled for her ugliness she is being used for her gift. Imagine her surprise when she is taken in by a man she can never see.

At least Calen is up front about the curse t hat causes him to turn into a giant serpent whenever someone sees him.

This is a great change because it adds to the theme of trust and love instead of being some cautionary tale about obeying your husband.

The real curse isn't turning into a snake though, the real curse is weak plot armor.
Everytime you time these characters are even close to happy, something go s horribly wrong.

I really loved Coiled it is so much more than a Greek myth retelling. It's an adventure with two strong characters who learn to love themselves as well as each other.

Danielle Jacobs does a superb job narrating. Each character is done with a different voice so there is no confusion as to who is talking. She also differentiates between dialogue, narrative, and internal thought.

If you are a fan of Greek mythology, fairytales or just great stories, then I'm sure you will love Coiled.
