Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Tami Hoag delivers a shocking stand-alone thriller

Dana Nolan was a promising young TV reporter until she was kidnapped by a notorious serial killer. A year has passed since she defeated her attacker, but Dana is still physically, emotionally, and psychologically scarred by her ordeal, with aftereffects including PTSD and memory loss. In an attempt to put herself back together after surviving the unthinkable, Dana returns to her hometown. But it doesn't provide the comfort she expects: She struggles to recognize family and childhood friends and begins experiencing dark flashbacks - but she's not sure if they're truly memories or side effects of her brain injury.

Dana decides to use her investigative skills to piece together her past and learns of the event that made her become a reporter in the first place: the disappearance of her best friend Casey Grant, the summer after high school graduation. Looking at her past and the unsolved mystery through the dark filter of PTSD, old friends seem to be suspects, authority figures part of a cover-up. Dana begins to question everything she knows. What is real? What is imagined? Are we defined by what happens to us? And is the truth really something too terrible to be believed?

If you like the Kovac and Liska series,

as I do, then you should know that this is really a sequel to "The 9th Girl." Apart from that series I had never read anything by this author, so I wasn't sure about this one, but it was on sale so I bought it. It picks up where "The 9th Girl" ended. Kovac and Liska are only in the beginning because the reporter moves back to her home town and this is her recovery story. At the same time, she is trying to solve a mystery from her teenage years. It's a good story with plenty of potential bad guys to speculate about as her memories gradually return.

Another amazing book by Tami Hoag

I just LOVE Tami Hoag and really liked this book. There wasn't a lot of suspense but I really bonded with the characters. I felt the only negatives were the need to develop the relationship a bit further between Dana and John and to put an end to the relationship with Roger, her step-father. Overall, the end came quickly, which is a positive testament to my interest in the book. While it's far from my favorite of her novels, it was well worth the credit.

Couldn't stop listening

The author tackles several difficult realities in a very moving way. Victims of violent crime, soldiers dealing with the affects of war experiences and how society too often judges without understanding deeper truths. excellent book

An engrossing book right from the beginning!

This is amazing! Made me fall in love with audio books! I always hated the slow and boring introductions of majority books but Cold Cold Heart wasnt the case. I believed that I didnt like dark stories however this book was able to captivate me and made me finish it. I recommend! Just listening to the 1st chpt allows you to determine if you will like it or not.

Author's Note at End Moves You As Much as Story

if I had to explain this to a friend, I would say this book was a cross between a medical mystery and a Dateline Special. I have not read (or listened to) a book by Tami Hoag in many year and glad I selected this book to do so. The story offers the listener a great insight into traumatic brain injury (TBI) as one of the main characters, Dana, is unfortunately dealing with this affliction. Through superb character development and plot progression, the listener is lead on a journey that uncovers a love triangle and the reflections of adolescence behaviors that involved a murder that will leave you guessing until the end. Coincidentally, it is Dana's recovery and coping mechanisms through the TBI that helps save her from others and herself.

Julia Whelan did a superb job with her performance. Shifting between characters was natural. The voice acting was superb as she allowed the listener to hear the voice of anguish and at other times, snarky, direct comments of someone dealing with a TBI. I forward to listening to another book with her.

What propelled me to write the review as soon as I finished listening was the author's note at the end. By providing personal insight into TBI, the listener then fully realizes two main character's plight in dealing with TBI and PTSD. You are left with a call-to-action to not only help, but to understand TBIs more. . .and read (or listen to) another great Tami Hoag book.
