Publisher's summary

New York Times best-selling author Allison Brennan is back with Compulsion, another high-octane thriller starring the "compelling new protagonist" (RT Book Reviews)

Investigative reporter Maxine Revere has a theory: that the five New York City murders for which Adam Bachman is being tried are just part of his killing spree. In probing the disappearance of a retired couple the prior summer, Max uncovers striking similarities to Bachman's MO and develops a theory that Bachman wasn't working alone.

Max wins a coveted pretrial interview with the killer, whose disarming composure is combined with uncomfortable knowledge of Max's own past. She leaves the room convinced, but unable to prove, that Bachman knows exactly what happened to the missing couple. The DA wants nothing to jeopardize his case against Bachman and refuses to consider Max's theory. With no physical evidence, Max has to rely on her own wits and investigative prowess to dig deep into Bachman's past. The picture that Max puts together is far darker and more deadly than she ever imagined.

As Max gets closer to the truth, she doesn't realize that she's walking down a road that has been paved just for her. That every step she takes brings her one step closer to a brilliant, methodical sociopath who has been waiting for her to make just one small mistake.

And when she does, he'll be there waiting.

I love this series!

The narrator kind of annoyed me a little bit. I'm not sure what it was about her, but... yeah, a bit annoying. The story was great. I randomly bought the first book in this series and couldn't be happier that I did. Max can get a little annoying because she is very arrogant, but at the same time that's what I love about her. The story is fast paced and the relationship development between her and David us great. I definitely recommend it.

Research and remember

1. Don’t give a blood pressure as a heart rate. A heart rate is one number BP is two. Let 120/80.
2. In the last chapter the author totally forgot that the lead character dislocated her shoulder. Come on. Are there no editors anymore.

Highly recommend

Hard to get into. But full of surprises. Almost gave up after the first few hours so glad I didn’t.

BOOK PROBABLY BETTER READ; REVIEWS WRONG.

The storyline is predictable, but if you read the last Max Revere book you know about what to expect; however, the narration is poor. Ms. Floss might be fine reading bedtime stories or as a single person, but her attempts at several characters is just bad. Also, the book itself has too many melodramatic moments that are poorly written involving two female characters. To top it all off Audible has the wrong reviews attached to this! What comes up is reviews for another book titled "Compulsion" by a completely different author. I have notified them three times without any corrective action on their part. Lip service, poor service. I am returning this book.

Better than the first

A fast moving, complex and interesting story. After finding Max a bit annoying in the first installment, we learn more about her background and it seems she may be starting to grow up. Yay! We also learn more about the supporting cast. I’ll definitely go for the next book in the series.

Eliza Foss is excellent, again, as narrator.

Corny and ridiculous

I am actually offended how Brennan took a strong female protagonist and turned her into a helpless heroine, full of melodrama, with 2 men fighting over in such a way it was almost laughable. My eyes got an exercise from rolling so much. Just ridiculous.
And let’s talk about story and plot. The twist was so anti climatic and far reaching, with no plausible connection of subplot and motivation that I almost threw my headset across the room when the twist was discovered. Just so stupid all around. It’s a pity too, because the first book had such a promising start but this was just so ridiculously stupid that I highly doubt I’ll waist anymore time on this series.
The narrator was good though- I’ll give it that much.

Book 2 is as bad as 1 was good

I was beyond disappointed with this book. After the first book in the series, I thought I found a winner. If I hadn't read book 1 I would have no idea who the characters were, save a one line description. I hung on to the end because I wanted to see how the characters would come out of their current situation.
