About this listen

Wish you knew how to walk up to anyone and break the ice effortlessly? Do you hope to avoid awkward silences and make an instant impression? You'll get more than that in this book: not only what, when, and how to say it, but the exact roots of why from human psychology and interaction.

Flowing conversation is the basis of all of our friendships and relationships, there's no getting around it. Yet sometimes it feels like we just can't connect in the depth we want without some luck on our part. Why? It's because most people haven't broken down the patterns of a great conversation. Specific principles get specific responses, and that's exactly what we want, isn't it?

Each phase of conversation analyzed, from beginning to end, complete with examples, so you can handle any conversation and see it to greater purpose. Every chapter is packed with actionable steps that are far beyond the generic "make eye contact and ask questions" that typically passes for social and conversation development.

Here's what you'll learn:

  • The best topics for icebreaking with friends, strangers, and anyone.
  • The biggest aspect of effective storytelling.
  • Three steps to take your conversations to depth and intimacy.
  • An introduction to the most common patterns and structures of humor.
  • What a verbal mirror is and why people love it.
  • Effective listening, and listening as a gateway to closeness.
  • A 21-day conversation boot camp plan for optimal development.

That promotion you want? That cutie you want to talk to? Better treatment and better friendships all around? Conversation skills are the common thread, and the most powerful tool to getting you everything you want. Most of all, conversation skills are necessary in our lives - making the choice to improve them will allow the best parts of you to shine.

Pretty good and informative

It has several simple, good ideas that could be used immediately. He has several other audio books you may like as well. Would recommend it.

The perfect introduction.

This book is touted by many reviewers negatively as being, "very basic."
I however, absolutely appreciate it's basic nature as I am not a star conversationalist, and will employ many of the lessons I learned in this book with hopes of becoming a better conversationalist. Read and learn!

Good starter for introverts but basic

I can see why some like this and some do not. It all depends on where you fall in the introvert spectrum. Most concepts are pretty basic here. I enjoyed it but was looking for more ways and examples of real life scenarios. Overall good but not great. Oh. And the narrator was kind of monotone.

Only a few key points.

This book is very basic but had some common sense reminders that are key and great points. Overall very basic. I had a credit left and used it on this.

Don't expect too much from this book but if you only have a short amount of time and want some common sense reminders then this is it.

Some examples were dumb and corny but expected.

very basic, didn't learn anything new.

if you're just dipping into self-improvement/communication books, this is a good book to start with. otherwise if you're already quite savvy this book offers nothing new.

full of cliches

So poorly written it was hard to listen to. Every other sentence was a cliche. Much of the advice was basic and OK I guess, but it was slanted towards businessmen trying to act like bros. Many of the suggestions for humor were passive aggressive or just plain mean. The suggestion to practice conversation on your barista shows a real lack of understanding of people - she really needs to get back to work but is required by her job to put up with you. The reader was fairly stiff.

I bought it for $3-4, but I'm not sure it was worth that.
