About this listen
From taking human life to being assigned to the body recovery team of nine brother firefighters, including one of his best friends, US Marine, former police officer and firefighter Travis Howze was plagued with extreme post-traumatic stress, depression, and survivor's guilt from a lifetime of very traumatic exposures dating back to early childhood. Victorious in the fight for his very own life at just three months old, his struggle to survive was just the beginning. Years later, he would defeat the very silent and deadly killer, PTSD, but not before it caused massive carnage and collateral damage to his personal and professional life.
From class clown to professional stand-up comedian and speaker, Travis’ unbelievably gripping, uncensored autobiography is a must-listen that takes you on an emotional roller-coaster ride through the eyes of an emergency responder. Follow Travis through countless horrific events, from funny stories inside of the firehouse, patrol car, and marine corps, to stand-up comedy stages and the dark places first responders have to go to in their mind to survive. This true, hard-hitting story is about staying in the fight. It’s about never quitting, always getting up, doing the things you love, and how the power of perspective, attitude, ownership and acceptance can lead to life-changing personal growth and a more purposeful life.

As a senior non-commissioned officer of Delta Force, the most elite and secretive special operations unit in the US military, Command Sergeant Major Tom Satterly fought some of this country's most fearsome enemies. Tom is a legend even among other Tier One special operators. Yet the enemy that cost him three marriages, and ruined his health physically and psychologically, existed in his brain. There is a war on masculinity, and everywhere we look—on every front we hold sacred—we can see the painful reminders of this collapsing order. On September 11, 2018, Navy SEAL Chief Edward Gallagher - a highly-decorated combat veteran with nine deployments to war zones in Africa, Afghanistan, and Iraq - was arrested for war crimes at the TBI medical clinic where he was receiving treatment. His incarceration was the culmination of a year-long whisper campaign started by a group of disgruntled members of his SEAL platoon. While heavily covered in the media, the full story of how a war hero was railroaded and nearly sent to prison for life for crimes he didn't commit has never been told.

Story
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

Brantt Myhres wasn't around for the birth of his daughter. Myhres had played for seven different NHL teams, and had made millions. But he'd been suspended four times, all for drug use, and he had partied his way out of the league. This is his story, in his own words, of how he fought his way out of minor hockey into the big league, but never left behind the ghosts of a bleak and troubled childhood.

Kennedy, a Green Beret, decorated Army sniper, and UFC headliner, has tackled a bull with his bare hands, jumped out of airplanes, dove to the depths of the ocean, and traveled the world hunting poachers, human traffickers, and the Taliban. But he’s also the same man who got kicked out of the police department, fire department, and as an EMT, before getting two women pregnant four days apart, and finally, been beaten up by his Special Forces colleagues.

Story
From the cow fields of Connecticut to the streets of San Francisco, Joe Clifford's Junkie Love traverses the lost highways of America, down the rocky roads of mental illness to the dead ends of addiction. Based on Clifford's own harrowing experience with drugs as a rock 'n' roll wannabe in the 1990s, the audiobook draws on the best of Kerouac and the Beats, injecting a heavy dose of pulp fiction as it threads a rollicking narrative through a doomed love triangle, lit up by the many strange characters he meets along the way.

Story
A lyrical and authentic book that recounts the story of a border-town family in Brownsville, Texas in the 1980s, as each member of the family desperately tries to assimilate and escape life on the border to become "real" Americans, even at the expense of their shared family history. This is really un-mined territory in the memoir genre that gives in-depth insight into a previously unexplored corner of America.

Story
People who have read my books, particularly “The War of Art” and its cousins, have a vague idea of the odyssey of a particular solitary guy, wracked with guilt and riven by self-doubt, as he struggles toward his destiny as a writer. But they have only the scantiest conception of the particulars of that journey. These particulars I’m hoping may be of use to others as they wrestle with their own version of that same odyssey. So let me try to strip it down. Let me tell the parts I normally leave out.

That place I named so long ago, the other reality that exists just outside most people’s everyday lives. It is a place that seems to exist parallel to the normal workaday existence: yet it is only a car accident or cardiac away for any of us. It manifested itself in brushfires, house fires, shootings, stabbings, hangings, accidents with injuries, cardiacs, codes, drownings, and a thousand other emergencies.

In this debut collection of essays, Pace tells of his years as a career paramedic—wandering through the highs and the lows, the saves and the losses, the patients he remembers, and the ones he tries to forget. In 1997, Pace began his career as an EMT because he wanted to do something exciting. He wanted to help people too. And he thought those two things—excitement and helping people—would exist hand in hand. With a little sprinkle of glory thrown in for good measure.

My husband and I saw Travis live in Raleigh last week. My husband found out about him first as he is also a Marine and firefighter and had already read this book. My husband would send me episodes of Travis’ podcast to listen to. Once we saw him live I knew I needed to read his book as well and it didn’t disappoint. I think all firefighter and military spouses should read this book and/or the podcast episodes. Yeah it’s dark and it’s raw, but it’s so beneficial. 10/10 highly recommend.

As a first responder's wife, whose hubby is facing PTSD it was an emotional and eye opening read to listen to very similar experiences. I think as a spouse of someone going through something similar it's important to try to understand their pain the best we can in order to support them in any way possible. Some chapters made me laugh while others moved me to tears. So much of your story is so parallel to my husband's in the fire service. I'm happy to have read/listened to it and look forward to your next book and hope you tour through Greenville again so we can meet again, since last time we hadn't discovered the PTSD side that had been bottled up for so long.

A Must Read for any 1st Responder
Every scenario has a reaction to the thoughts and actionable results that are determined by layered responses to a reactive situation. The human being within us does not ever stay constant throughout the evolution of a 1st responder's career. The expectations to never change from who we were to who we have become is many times uncontrollable. Thank you for sharing your story and relating it to our own.

Great Perspective
I’m new to the fire service and don’t necessarily know much about the history of it all. I heard Travis on the Getting Salty Podcast (as I’m trying to take in as much fire service as possible). He’s just a genuine no BS guy that has been subject to a ton of trauma. I never even thought that my 2+ years on duty had any impact on me, but through this book and same his titled Podcast it has opened my eyes to changes I’ve been feeling. Thank you for the perspective, the insight and the motivation to stay on top of the mental health of myself and my crew.
