Publisher's summary

A secret kept for a thousand years....

After the dramatic theft of a priceless artefact from Durham Cathedral, the rest of the world believes that DCI Ryan and his team were able to recover and return St Cuthbert's cross to its rightful home. But Ryan knows the cross he recovered was a fake - far from being over, their problems are only just beginning....

Just as Ryan and his team begin to unravel the truth behind the spate of mysterious thefts, something even more priceless is stolen - something that can never be replaced.

As the nationwide manhunt continues without success, Ryan is thrust into despair-until he realises the answer lies not in modern policing, but in an age-old secret known only to a chosen few. To recover what's been lost, he must first crack 'Cuthbert's Code', following the trail of a long-dead saint across the wild, unpredictable hills and valleys of the borderlands.

Can Ryan find what he's looking for, before it's too late?

He's going to need a miracle....

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunit set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

"Life isn't all black and white."

Sometimes characters can intrude just a little too much into their stories and this is one such. Forever cuddling up to tell their partner in life and/ or work now fortunate they are might be a noble sentiment but, in a police procedural crime investigation, it becomes both annoying and inappropriate. Otherwise, the book is well written, suspenseful and interesting.
Narration by Jonathan Keeble, was, as always, excellent

Cuthbert's Way

The more I listen/read the more I love DCI Ryan & his Family and Team. The history that goes with the books and the emotions are very good, while the murders are always exciting. This would make a really good TV crime series . I cannot wait for the next book to come out. The characters and narration are perfect.

A tolerable sequel

This book and it’s predecessor are two of the shortest and most unbelievable in in the DCI Ryan series. The story is more biased against traditional Catholic faith than the other books which do display the author’s atheist belief system. I wonder why write about holy relics in a way that is disdainful? Most of the series is not so openly antagonistic to Christianity. The mystery series has been fast paced and interesting. Maybe the author needs to move on to new characters and new settings due to feelings of boredom and antipathy with these characters and locale.

interesting premise

An ill man believing that a dead monk's relics will cure him, kills several people to hide his plans. All the characters in the book are appealing, and the narrator is excellent.

Love this series..

I had a lot of trouble with downloading this book but I finally gave up on the book and decided to just listen to it. As always I love Ryan and his team, and his wife and new baby.

This was all about a saint that died 1537 and a man who believed that he could preform miracles after all that time. And he wanted everything that had to do with Cuthbert, no matter how many people he had to kill.

No romance and no swearing.

As for the narration: You can't beat Jonathan Keeble when it comes to all the wonderful characters in this series.

Other victims are available

I’m beginning to think the author doesn’t trust her readers ability to invest in a story if one of the main characters isn’t the one in mortal peril. It’s surely time to give Anna, Jack and the rest of Ryan’s team a break and maybe find some Real World victims they can seek justice for.

Other than that, the storyline was interesting and the narration as good as usual. The books are getting shorter though.

Historical Mystery of Monks and Bishops

The lessons learned in a policeman’s life show up at the most needed times in the lives of the DCI Ryan, his family and friends. Friendships grow deeper as does the bond of parents and their children. This book contains so much historical information, it is educational as much as mystery. Kept me interested from beginning to end!

Love Jonathan Keeble's voice

These books (about Maxwell Ryan) are very in-depth, they have a little bit of romance a little bit of humor. there was a point I started to cry in this story. They're very enjoyable. especially when You have audible and can listen to the book, it's like seeing a movie in your head.

Bad narrator

Anna is a highly educated professor and she sounds like 10 year old Sam. I enjoy the author so have stuck with the series. My blood pressure goes up with the narration of her speaking.
