About this listen

Diamonds are a girl's best friends, unless the carat is dangled....

When 27-year-old Hilary meets perfect on paper, Marc, she thinks she has finally found the man of her dreams. He's everything she is looking for - handsome, successful, funny, and has a gorgeous home on the beach. Marc immediately sweeps Hilary off her feet. She is positive her single days of dating duds are over and her happy ever after is right around the corner.

Well, when something seems too good to be, true it usually is!

Hilary quickly finds out Marc has one big problem - he is beyond afraid of commitment! She is willing to take things slow, but after four long years, some days their relationship seems to be going in reverse.

Tired of waiting for Marc to come to his senses, while on vacation, the couple's friends decide to take matters into their own hands and throw a surprise "engagement" party. Will this be the kick Marc needs to pop the question or will their meddling destroy the couple?

In this chick lit memoir, Hilary Grossman digs deep as she explores the good, the bad, and the frustrating of dating and relationships. Dangled Carat is the perfect lighthearted, laugh-out-loud, relatable book for every girl who wondered if she should love him or dump him.

Patience is a Virtue

I loved this humorous, heartrending and ultimately triumphant memoir of navigating a relationship with someone who has commitment issues. It has to be a painful experience in retrospect to tap into your emotions and feelings, I’m not that brave, nor would I have the patience of Job that Hilary had.

The story centers around Hilary a 27-year-old woman who meets Marc the man of her dreams and a confirmed bachelor, but what happens when the confirmed bachelor begrudgingly falls in love too?

Sometimes I felt as though Marc’s character was needlessly cruel, but I couldn’t see him as mean-spirited but probably just completely oblivious in some ways to other people’s feelings, although on the other hand, you could tell he was a caring person to those he deemed worthy of sharing his inner circle. The big question in the story was whether Hilary was part of that inner circle or just flitting on the periphery.

Would I suggest this as a playbook for young women who find themselves in a similar situation? Not likely, but for every Warren Beatty, there’s an Annette Bening out there somewhere!

Lisa Beacom did an excellent job narrating Dangled Carat and she also narrated Hilary Grossman’s first audiobook Plan Bea, which I recommend also. The audio quality, for the most part, was top notch there were a couple of areas where the audio was a little breathy, but it was corrected quickly.

Any additional comments?

3.5 stars

Overall and entertaining and enjoyable story. When I started this story I didn't realize it was a memoir. I didn't realize it was until after I had finished it. So it's the story of one woman's (Hilary Grossmans) path to her own personal own HEA.
Which actually kind of makes it a little odd to review the story. Because it's actually not just a made up work of fiction, so your giving your review on someone's life story basically. That's interesting and unusual to say the least, who am I to critique someone else's love story.

Relationships are hard and take work no matter what stage of your relationship you are in. We all know what works for one couple may be disastrous for the next couple. Being in a relationship with someone who is adverse to commitment brings it's own set of unique relationship issues. Have to say though, Hilary had the patience of a saint. Are some men worth waiting for? Yes, but not when it starts to make you doubt yourself. Women are their own worst enemies sometimes. Our brains never shut off and we can't stop analyzing every little detail. Glad that everything worked out in the end and they have their HEA.

Lisa Beacom did a really good job with the narration. Pleasant voice, easy to listen to for long periods of time. Good character voices. She was able to bring the characters emotions to life especially Hilary's.

Great Performance!

Would you listen to Dangled Carat again? Why?

Yes. The narrator kept it interesting and easy to follow.

What about Lisa Beacom’s performance did you like?

It is sometimes hard to perform an entire book in first person, especially when it involves mostly thoughts. The narrator performed it in such a way that it was never monotonous and always kept my attention.

I can't believe I listened to the whole thing

Worst book ever. She is a huge doormat and he is maybe the biggest jerk ever. This is not cute, sweet and loving. It highlights what an ass he is and how pathetic he is. I seriously didn't want her to wind up with him.
