Publisher's summary

YouTube sensation Lizzie Velasquez offers a plan to create a "culture of kindness" that leads to a more compassionate world.

When Lizzie Velasquez was 17 years old, she came across a video online titled "The World's Ugliest Woman" - only to discover that it featured her. In response, she decided to stand up on behalf of victims everywhere and created a YouTube channel and TED talk that have drawn tens of millions of viewers. In this revelatory book, Lizzie reveals the hidden forces that give rise to cruelty and how we can redirect them to unlock empathy and kindness. Lizzie advocates we:

  • Fully embrace people's differences as well as our own
  • Throw on our "capes" and overcome the obstacles in our paths
  • Believe in love and take on the world with the right mental attitude

Brilliantly drawing on Lizzie's own experiences, Dare to Be Kind presents the path to radical acceptance, love, and tolerance and provides a framework to help you lead a confident, resilient life and ultimately build a more compassionate world for everyone.

Sincere & Beautifull + A Pure Eternal Masterpiece

What made the experience of listening to Dare to Be Kind the most enjoyable?

The Total Package. The reading and quality are spot on. I have only praise and kudos for everything this non-fiction work encapsulates. I have learned MUCH from Audibles self-help books, yet Dare To Be Kind is the Cap-Stone in that regard. I will always be thankful for the lessons and advice given in this book, and do my best to live the message. Also the enhanced format truly brings out the cadence and professionalism of the reading. I would of enjoyed it whatever format it was in. Yet the way it has been provided is/was a real treat.

What did you like best about this story?

It's a good length. So there is a great amount to enjoy. I was a fan before I bought the book. The best part of it all for me is that it is very specific towards kindness/compassion and making the world a happier place. You can tell how much effort was put into every area of presentation, I waited over 2 months for this pre-order and it was worth every second.

Have you listened to any of Lizzie Velasquez’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes I have, and it is for sure her best work/writing to date. It is even better than her TedX talk which was superb.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

That aggression does not work on bullies. That they are hurting people, and that only compassion/love can truly heal that.

Any additional comments?

I wanted to be able to write this review after listening to it a few more times, and after meditating/praying for a long period. Yet I suppose I just had the fire too strong to wait for that...maybe I can do another review or add something to this one. I did the best I could now because I wanted others to know, and to pass it forwards type deal as I feel so stellar a benefit from this recording.

We must be political when looking to the helpers.

Would you consider the audio edition of Dare to Be Kind to be better than the print version?

Yes, hearing Lizzie's voice was inspiring.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I researched one of the people Lizzie speaks of admiringly and found he was an agent for Donald Trump at one point. Knowing that Lizzie looks up to him made me question Lizzie and hope her politics aren't in alignment with Trump. It is impossible to be against bullies and in favor of Trump.

Which scene was your favorite?

I love how her father relates with her when she goes to elementary school.

What did you learn from Dare to Be Kind that you would use in your daily life?

Sometimes it is the part of us that we are insecure about that if we let it shine, makes us most unique.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I think that everyone can relate to this book, she goes into topics that are difficult for anyone to talk about and helps you see things in a different perspective. Lizzie's story is so inspirational, she is such a kind and genuine person. I found myself wanting the story to continue after it ended, good thing I'm subscribed to her YouTube channel...

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dare to Be Kind?

Even though everyone's stories are different, sometimes they are relatable.

What does Lizzie Velasquez bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I really liked that she read it because it was her story. I could hear her humor and I felt like I was watching one of her YouTube videos, not just listening to someone read a book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listened to this over several walks. I may have looked a little silly a few times when I nodded my head because I agreed with something she said, lol..

Any additional comments?

I suggest watching her documentary, "A Brave Heart: The Lizzie Velasquez Story". She makes a lot of references to it and it also helps you understand her story better.

Intended for young people

Lovely message but sounded more like reading from a journal. I would have picked someone else to narrate to bring the story alive. Great book for teens and young adults. I love her motivational speaking and was disappointed in the book.
