About this listen

Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett must accompany a Silicon Valley CEO on a hunting trip - but soon learns that he himself may be the hunted - in the thrilling new novel from number-one New York Times best-selling author C. J. Box.

When the governor of Wyoming gives Joe Pickett the thankless task of taking a tech baron on an elk hunting trip, Joe reluctantly treks into the wilderness with his high-profile charge. But as they venture into the woods, a man-hunter is hot on their heels, driven by a desire for revenge. Finding himself without a weapon, a horse, or a way to communicate, Joe must rely on his wits and his knowledge of the outdoors to protect himself and his companion.

Meanwhile, Joe's closest friend, Nate Romanowski, and his own daughter Sheridan learn of the threat to Joe's life and follow him into the woods. In a stunning final showdown, the three of them come up against the worst that nature - and man - have to offer.

...and, as always, David Chandler is pitch perfect as the narrator. I listened to the entire book in one day and was excited that it ended with a cliffhanger. Perhaps I won’t have to wait too long for the next book?

Listening, I thought that Joe was just having a really tough time and I really enjoyed the explanation at the end of the book. I think that the research and the details flesh out the story.

I just love the Joe Pickett books...

I like all the Joe Picket novels. This is a great addition. I can't wait for the next one.

Loved it!

I love the well crafted stories of this series with characters I really care about.! The only reason I gave 4 stars for the story instead of 5 is that I really appreciated the earlier books which were completely resolved at the end of each book. Each could be read as a stand alone book, but the characters lives also progressed from book to book. I appreciated the way the reader/listener was given just the right amount of background information to understand any contributing elements from previous books. This book didn't end in a huge cliff hanger... it was mostly resolved, but this and the last few books have left unresolved threads serving as a lead into the next book. I just dislike the unresolved component to the story.

Love this series!

I enjoyed this book just as much as the very first Joe Pickett book. That’s not always the case once an author writes this many books into a series. I’ve already listened through twice. CJ B ox does an excellent job with his character creation and development. If you are reading, CJ, thank you for the excellent entertainment!

Does not disappoint. Excellent.

I usually like the Joe Pocket series, but this one was hard to follow and the characters weren't very interesting. unrealistic to the point of ridiculous too. I think the old run down shack in the woods turned out to be more the the room of requirement in Harry Potter! whatever Joe needed, somehow it appeared. so why when the big show down happened does Nate have to blow away a horse in order to bring down the rider!? All in all not my favorite story,

not as good

unaware of a better narrator and the story was top flight. In CJ Box typical fashion the characters were truly memorable and accompanied by a host of current, controversial side topics

knuckle biting page tutmet

Another page turner by Box. I was concerned at first because of the stereotype characters at the start but that ended relatively quickly and I couldn’t put it down.
Chandler does an admirable job with all the characters. It just went too fast.

If you enjoy the outdoors and the west

This was an edge of your seat, engaging story. But, for me, the performer often got in the way. My suggestion to the author is to find another reader.

Great Story Irritating Performance

I've listened to several CJ Box books on Audible and enjoyed every single one. The narration is great, as always.
