About this listen
Hear the heart-pounding series finale!
Lilik is on the warpath. Behind her, House Ulstat is a smoking pit. Ahead, Mieshk Ulstat wields terrible magic from within an impregnable fortress. The battle approaches.
Never mind that Lilik's fighters are actually a ragtag assortment of smugglers and thieves. Forget that something is terribly wrong with the aether, leaving Lilik's magic unpredictable. Lilik is the last hope for stopping Mieshk's cataclysm.
Unfortunately, Lilik's problems aren't limited to insurmountable odds and questionable allies. Ioene still holds secrets. A dark force has awakened in the island's heart.
And it's hungry.

Story
The Netherworld: it is a hellish landscape inhabited only by demons. Joining the ranks of newborn demons, Salvos is thrown into the violent, anarchy-ruled landscape of that world. To survive, she will have to learn, she will have to adapt, and she will have to evolve. She will gain experience to reach new Levels of power. Her curiosity aids her but her pride could be her fall. It is the nature of the Netherworld to avoid or conquer any threats faced. After all, the law of evolution is survival of the fittest, and Salvos is a survivor.

Story
Kieran is here for revenge. He's here to kill the most powerful man in Magical San Francisco—his father. He'll destroy anything in his way. And I've managed to catch his eye. I live in the shadows for a reason, split between the worlds of the magical and the mundane. I'm a punching bag for both societies, but with the magic of Hades, it's the only way to stay alive. To stay free. If the powers that be knew what I was, they'd slap me in a cage and make me their weapon.

Story
I had no idea how those words would change my life. Or how they’d changed my life already...until the day the most dangerous man I’ve ever met waltzed onto my farm and left us a death sentence. In an invitation. My younger brother has been chosen for the prestigious, secret magical school hidden within the folds of our mundane world. A place so dangerous, they don’t guarantee you’ll make it out alive. If he doesn't go, our entire family will be killed. It’s the same invitation my older brother received three years ago - the same place where he mysteriously died.

My name is Amelia Gray. I'm a cemetery restorer who sees ghosts. In order to protect myself from the parasitic nature of the dead, I've always held fast to these rules passed down from my father…until now. Detective John Devlin needs my help to find a killer, but he is haunted by ghosts who shadow his every move. To warn him would be to invite them into my life. I've vowed to keep my distance, but the pull of his magnetism grows ever stronger even as the headstone symbols lead me closer to truth and to the gossamer veil that separates this world from the next.

Good book, with some annoyances
Okay, if you've made it this far you know what's going on in the story. Most of the series is very good. In my opinion not worth a re-listen, but still worth a listen and purchase. There are some really cool original concepts in the series, and this book is no exception.
So what's my complaint? The main protagonist, and to a lesser degree her counterpart. She is faced with tremendous challenges, but at every turn, the people that love and support her are ignored for their advice. Consistently she gets wrapped up in doubt and anger and charges ahead, often times alone, and makes things worse. Yeah, I can understand it early on, she's coming to terms with... all of it, but still, there are a ton of people around her, even when she's alone, that are there guiding her and supporting her. The phrase that comes to mind is "You need to get out of your own way." Now if this were an occasional behavior it wouldn't have bothered me, she's facing an immense challenge, as well as the burden of leadership on very young shoulders. However it really got to me. To the point I wanted to yell at her.
As to her counterpart... All I've got to say is when the world is coming to an end, and you *know* you're part of the solution, don't curl up in a ball and hide from the reality of the situation WHILE the feces is hitting the fan. Perhaps this is my former military training, but two very apropos sayings come to mind, "Do something, even if it's wrong." and "If you're going through hell, keep going." Of *all* the things he could have done to sabotage things, inaction is by far the most harmful. Yes, I know, going through a lot, young, overwhelmed, etc. It still annoyed me.
Now these annoyances aside, these characteristics in the two of them serve a very important purpose to the story line. So to some degree I'm willing to ignore them, but any time I want to yell at not one, but two of the main characters, I'm going to bump the story down a star. On principle.
Khristine Hvam is an excellent narrator, but I found occasions where it was difficult to tell which character she was speaking for. Not often because the context provides many of the hooks necessary, but some of the voices were just too close to one another. She's no Wil Wheaton when it comes to narration, he's pretty hard to beat in my opinion, but I think she's almost on par with the narration quality of Nick Podehl.

Khristine Hvam makes the story!
Khristine Hvam is one of my favorite female narrators. She has such range, female and male characters alike.
The trilogy kept my interest more by her narration than the story line. However, the books were fun and I enjoy this author. I hope to hear more from both soon.

Not Ms. Summers's greatest, to this litRPG fan.
I was introduced to Ms. Summers writing through the Stonehaven League series. For me, that was 5 star work. Performances were topnotch, and while litRPG has conventions, they were handled really well. The protagonist was likable, her actions were logical within the frame of the game and her life, and so forth. Very enjoyable, well performed. and something I wanted in my library so that I could listen to again.
There was also a strong element of "girl comes of age and learns to live and love life". But it was balanced and you didn't smell like fish from being slapped in the face with it.
That was my experience with Ms. Summers's work. With that as background, this series was a disappointment. To try to synopsize without spoiling, lower caste poor slum girl thinks she is magic, isn't magic, is fake magic, is real magic, is unique magic, and finally is world saving magic.
Through all her magic shifts she fights all sorts of people and saves the world, and learns to live and love life.
To me, this was kind of a rehash.
As to the performance, the reader spoke clearly, enunciated well, didn't get hetronyms jarringly wrong and the levels and miking were good. My wife put it best, though. The reader sounded like an author reading their own work, and not a professional performer, or part of a cast. These days, in my opinion, a five star performance has to either be multiple cast members with (minimum) a reader for the male voices and a reader for female voices, or a professional actor (Wil Wheaton comes to mind) who can put verve into a story.
This performance was workmanlike but not sparkling.
I buy audio books I like. I get others from the library. I have many in my library because I want to listen to them again. I feel that way about the Stonehaven series. I recently had a brush with death and as I lay in the hospital, recovering, I thought about the Stonehaven books and I was happy that I would get to hear them again. I got this series from Audible on the strength of that series...but now I wish I had gotten it from the library.
If you read Stonehaven and your favorite parts were the coming of age bits, I think you will like this book more than I did. But I'm going to shower and wash the fish smell off.
