About this listen

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Darkest Truth by Catherine Kirwan, read by Eileen Walsh.

Recommended by Graham Norton on The Graham Norton Show

He'll do anything to protect his secrets. She'll stop at nothing to expose the truth.

It only takes one person to break the silence.

When solicitor Finn Fitzpatrick is approached by a man to investigate the death of his daughter, her first instinct is to refuse.

The father is grieving, and unable to accept that his daughter committed suicide. And yet something about the man’s story chimes with Finn.

Why did a bright, confident, beautiful young girl suddenly drop out of school? Could the answer lie in her relationship with Ireland's most famous film director?

The deeper Finn goes into the case, the more dark, twisted and dangerous the picture becomes.

Because these are powerful people she is trying to expose. And they're willing to do anything to keep the truth hidden.

Critic reviews

'Just finished Darkest Truth by Catherine Kirwan. It's brilliant! A heroine flawed but not in the normal whisky-soaked-my-wife-has-left me way - that takes you on an evocative crime journey through the cut-throughs and cobbles of Cork City. A fabulous sleep thief and great read.' OWEN McDONNELL, Killing Eve

'A clever twist on the genre.' ARAMINTA HALL, author of Our Kind of Cruelty

'A gripping, twisting novel of mounting suspense. It couldn't be more relevant.' AMY LLOYD, author of The Innocent Wife

Relatively good

If you love Tana French but have read everything she’s written and moved to Cas Frear and read all she’s written then you’re hunting for something similar written by a similar author - like me you’ll find you’re kinda out of luck. After researching for far too long I came across this author. A favourite genre of mine set in the UK with a fantastic narrator who has a fabulous voice and accent - can’t go wrong as far as I’m concerned. It’s just that it’s not phenomenal in any way - a bit simple and a story we’ve heard before but it is above average - just not very original and definitely not intricate. The main character is Finn - she’s likable and I can see where there will be a multi book series based around her. The story doesn’t insult your intelligence but it isn’t nuanced. It’s a decent story with an outstanding performance. I just didn’t like the way it was “wrapped up” . Seems so easy ending a story in this particular fashion . There are a couple surprises but it’s not intricately woven by any means. Still a solid grade of B. I’ll read Book 2 definitely.

Brilliant in every sense of the word!

Brilliant in every sense of the word! This is one of the best mysteries I have read in years! It was very well constructed and crafted. The characters were engaging and believable - actually, quite a sad comment when you realize that the villains are too believable. I truly hope this is the beginning of a series so that we will see the "good guys" again! And, as an added plus and rare jewel: the narrator is outstanding. I will be on the lookout for her other works. Thank you to Catherine Kirwan, Eileen Walsh, Penguin, Random House Audio Books and Audible!

Good, not great.

If I could, I'd give this 3.5 stars. The story is interesting--although it verges on melodrama--and decently written. The performance is pretty good. I enjoyed listening to it. I just wasn't enthralled.
