Publisher's summary

It began with the breathtaking Daughter of Smoke and bone... This November, the story continues in the astounding sequel, Days of Blood and Starlight Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living - one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers' arms to take their turn in the killing and dying.

Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon's secret temple and dreamed of a world that was a like a jewel-box without a jewel - a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness.

This was not that world.

Critic reviews

“Taylor continues to build an irresistible fantasy world in this grim sequel to her masterful Daughter of Smoke and Bone . . . Taylor's dazzling writing and skill at creating suspense are strong as ever; fantasy lovers will gobble up this book with satisfaction” ( Publishers Weekly Starred Review)
“For once the frenzy over a teen novel is justified. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is one of those books that blots out reality, so consumed do you become in its fantasy world of chimeras and angels . . . inevitably there is an epic romance but Taylor is a talented writer; this is aeons apart from the usual angels and werewolves dross.” ( Sunday Telegraph)
'Daugther of Smoke and Bone is that rare beast: a novel that takes the familiar and makes it appear startling and new. Taylor has embraced the mythology of angels and reworked it in an extraordinary form, so that by the end of this lyrical, haunting book, I wanted to believe in the existence of these violent, tormented beings. I can hardly wait for the next installment.”
"WOW. I wish I had written this book." (Patrick Rothfuss)
"'You don't want this book to end . . . it's cancelling-weekend-plans, stay-up-all-night-addictive." ( Easy Living)
"Northern Lights and Pan's Labyrinth in one." ( Stylist)
"A pacy and inventive tale of a girl with an unknown past and supernatural friends . . . Mesmerising." ( Marie Claire)

A "page turner"

Khristine Hvam reprises her role as narrator in this 2nd entry in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series and delivers a performance that raises Laini Taylor's solid writing to a higher level.

Despite bordering on an over-reliance on "convenient moments", Taylor has managed to write a novel that is both gripping and exciting that somehow transcends the medium and becomes an auditory "page turner". I sometimes get the feeling that the book was written with narration in mind.

For anyone looking to read a YA/Teen novel with elements of fantasy, this is a series that deserves attention.

Kept me on the edge of my seat

I really enjoyed the way the story is brought to live. I like the fact the narrator is able to read Laini Taylors words with just the right kind of emotion. You feel the love, despair, anger or whatever needs to be felt.

Love all the characters ... But Suzanna is and will forever be my favorite.

Great start, not so good follow up

Great narrator, but I struggled to finish this book. First book had so much potential.

Just as exciting and vivid as the first

It's interesting that even though I have already read all 3 books and loved them, listening to them brings a whole new quality to them.

Remember to breathe!

Where does Days of Blood and Starlight rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Difficult question! This book is harsh, brutal and heartbreaking. Very little distracts from the emotional (awful) journeys each character goes through but WOW is it beautifully written, I was enraptured, caught up, taken with and subsequently smashed along with each person. I loved it but it was draining!

Any additional comments?

Take care, and make sure you are up for some of the tough topics of reincarnation, rape, torture, slaughter, hangings and many many more emotionally brutal relationship orientated interactions. It is a sharper version of the first book, I will definitely be reading the third and revisiting this one, it is a mindset shifter.

Magical listening experience with a deeper meaning

Days of Blood and Starlight is the second book in a trilogy and follows the events of Daughter of Smoke and Bone.
After Karou has found out about her past life and that Akiva is responsible for the demise of her own race, the chimaera, Karou decided to leave Akiva. Now she is allied with the chimaera rebells and helps them by resurrecting their fallen. Meanwhile Akiva thinks that Karou is dead and plans his own rebellion against his father. In Prague, Zuzana is worried about her friend and tries to decipher an email sent by Karou that might help her find her friend.

I had some more troubles getting into this volume than I had with the first book. The book only grapped me once I had listened to about a third of it; but then it enfolded its whole charme and proved to be just as good as the first volume.

It is more than just a fantasy book or a romance novel. It is an intricately woven story of two worlds, two leaders bent on war and cruelty and a few people trying to bring peace to their world. It is a story about hate and politics, but it is also a story about friendship.

The unabridged audiobook is narrated again by Khristine Hvam, who already narrated the first book. I fell in love with her way of narrating in the first book and enoyed her interpretation of this second book just as much. She has a wonderful voice and I particularly liked how she gave life to Karou's friend Zuzana (whom I find a great character).
