Great Spillane Masterpiece

Spillane is most famous for his Mike Hammer series and Max Allan Collins completed half a dozen additional Hammer titles from Spillane's unfinished manuscripts. Those are terrific books and show why Spillane was the best-selling author for decades. This book was in progress when Spillane died and was completed by Collins and published by Hard Case Crime (with a somewhat underwhelming cover.) Arguably, it's Spillane's best work. It's the story of a recently retired cop from New York who retires to Florida and then gets involved in the case of a missing girl-friend, long thought dead, who had some evidence against the mob. The tale grows complex and a bit melodramatic, but it's a great story with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing. Highly recommended!

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Could not get by the first few minutes. Sorry, his style of reading is not for me.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

did not get there

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Richard Ferrone?

As stated before... Stacy Keach... Mr. MIke Hammer

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

did not get there

Any additional comments?

not really. Love Mickey, but need the Hammer

Mr. Ferrone is no Stacy Keach
