About this listen
This program is read by the author.
“Through honest stories and inspiring lessons from her life, A’ja Wilson reminds us to never doubt who we are or apologize for being true to ourselves. Dear Black Girls is a must-read for every Black girl out there.”―Gabrielle Union, New York Times bestselling author of We're Going to Need More Wine and You Got Anything Stronger?
This one is for all the girls with an apostrophe in their names.
This is for all the girls who are labeled “too loud” and “too emotional.”
This is for all the girls who are constantly asked, “Oh, what did you do with your hair? That’s new.”
This is for my Black girls.
Despite gold medals, WNBA championships, and a list of accolades, A’ja Wilson knows how it feels to be swept under the rug—to not be heard, to not feel seen, to not be taken seriously. As a fourth grader going to a primarily white school in South Carolina, A’ja was told she’d have to stay outside for a classmate’s birthday party. “Huh?” she asked. Because the birthday girl’s father didn’t like Black people.
Wilson tells stories like this, about how even when life tried to hold her down, it didn’t stop her. She shares her contribution to “The Talk,” and how to keep fighting, all while igniting strength, passion, and joy. Dear Black Girls is a necessary and meaningful exploration of what it means to be a Black woman in America today—and a rallying cry to lift up women and girls everywhere.
"Dear Black Girls is filled with phenomenal stories and empowering insight on what it means to be a woman in today’s world. I didn’t want to put it down.”―Tunde Oyeneyin, New York Times bestselling author of Speak

Keke Palmer thought she knew who she was. What it means to be a good person and what it takes to be a success. It all seemed so simple, until she realized the challenges she would have to face to prove to herself who she wanted to be. From feeling alienated to having to restart her career after ten years in to becoming a single mother just months after her son was born—everything she worked for in life that she felt granted her what she wanted now also reminded her that “life is going to life” and throw curveballs regardless of what you deserve.

Growing up in the Liberty City area of Miami, Florida, Katrina “Trina” Taylor spent her childhood feeling relatively sheltered by her mother and stepfather. Trina and her mother had an unbreakable bond, and Liberty City felt like a playground made just for her. In Da Baddest, Trina’s voice is, as always, powerful, insightful, witty, and provocative, while also showcasing her vulnerability and deep love for her family, home, and music

Story
His real name was Earl Simmons. As a child, he placed higher on tests than his fellow students and liked to spend mornings with his mother and sisters playing games and making pancakes. But for young Earl - a boy growing up on the streets of Yonkers, New York - that kind of childhood didn’t last long. Beatings, abuse, and neglect very soon had him moving on to other things, like robbing, stealing, drugs, and, eventually, jail. Along the way, however, he found a talent and a passion for rhyme.

It all seemed so simple, until she realized the challenges she would have to face to prove to herself who she wanted to be. In a powerfully intimate and non-traditional (or "new-fashioned") memoir, Kwame Alexander shares snapshots of a man learning how to love. He takes us through stories of his parents: from being awkward newlyweds in the sticky Chicago summer of 1967, to the sometimes-confusing ways they showed their love to each other, and for him. He explores his own relationships—his difficulties as a newly wedded, 22-year-old father, and the precariousness of his early marriage working in a jazz club with his second wife.

Story
Years ago, Tabitha Brown started a 30-day personal challenge that she called “I Did a New Thing!” The challenge was simple. Every day she would do something she’d never done before. Sometimes it was something small like trying a new food. Other times, she’d step it up a bit and speak to someone she’d never spoken to before. Still other times, she’d do the hard thing—facing a fear that she had, like having that tough conversation with a friend. No matter what it was, the point was that she was going to take a leap of faith and watch God open up a new lane for her.

Blend of perspective, support, and autobiography
Lots of good messages and anecdotes in this book. I felt perhaps what was missing is guidance for someone who doesn’t have the strong family support that A’ja grew up with. But I enjoyed the author’s words of wisdom and reflections on her life, strengths, and imperfections.

Very inspirational, something that another black woman can truly relate to.
I love hearing her story, the good, the bad and the ugly. I am much older so the message for the most part was lost on me, however there were a few nuggets that I am taking away. I hope the author continues on her writing journey. Skee-Wee Soror🩷💚

Outstanding!!!
A’ja— thank you!!! You spoke not only for Black girls the same age and younger than you. You also spoke for Black girls like me, over 50, who had similar experiences navigating academics and professions, yet daily suppressed our emotions and too easily took responsibility for the shortcomings of others. I am so proud of you for having the courage to tell and share your truth!! The way in which you shared your relationship with your grandmother and mother gave voice also to the awesome impact that my mom and maternal grandmother had on me. Keep doing you! And again, thank you Sis!
