About this listen

The official behind-the-scenes audiobook of the hit musical that won six Tony Awards, now also a major motion picture!

A letter that was never meant to be seen, a lie that was never meant to be told, a life he never dreamed he could have. Evan Hansen is about to get the one thing he's always wanted: A chance to finally fit in. Both deeply personal and profoundly contemporary, Dear Evan Hansen is a new American musical about life and the way we live it.

The audiobook - produced by Melcher Media, the team behind Hamilton, Wicked, Rent, and many more - tells the story of the musical from its conception nearly a decade ago to the Broadway stage. From developing the idea to writing the show, composing, casting, and rehearsals, Dear Evan Hansen appeals to fans far and wide offering them the opportunity to continuously revisit the show, and for those who haven't seen the musical, listening to the audiobook will make them feel like they have.

Filled with interviews with the cast and crew, original behind-the-scenes photography, a deeper look into Evan's fictional world and the visual world of the show, unreleased lyrics, and of course the libretto, as well as reflections on the creators own formative memories from their adolescence as it relates to the show's themes, and important examinations of how we present ourselves online and mental health, Dear Evan Hansen is a beautifully produced, thoughtful, and uplifting audiobook.

Editorial reviews

Editors Select, November 2017

Let me preface this by saying how much I loved the show Dear Evan Hansen. The music, the acting, the story line - everything was perfect. So of course, I had to pick up Dear Evan Hansen: Through the Window, which is a behind-the-scenes look into the production and development of this thoughtful tearjerker of a show. It was incredible to hear how much time and effort goes into not just writing and creating the show but developing the backstory of the characters and the experiences that shaped their lives. Fair warning for non-New Yorkers: This book WILL make you want to see the show...so you might have to road trip to NYC. Of course, you can repeat listen in the car. —Laura, Audible Editor

As a big theatre fan, I love books that delve into the backstory of a show. A quick and easy listen. Honestly, a bit too quick and too easy. Comparing this to the books for Hamilton and Come From Away, there is not much substance here. I wish there were more interviews with the cast. Taylor Trensch does a fine job narrating.

I do adore this show so much so I also bought the book! The book itself is a beautiful "coffee table" book.

A wonderful book for any theatre fan!

I wanted the story and just got a behind the scenes version. I was disappointed.

Not what I expected.

I purchased this book anticipating the actual play. Instead, I got a behind the scenes podcast. Do not purchase if you are expecting Dear Evan Hansen.
