A careful, methodical young data analyst for a California insurance company, John Walker knows when people will marry, at what age they will most likely have children, and when they will die. All signs point to a long successful career---until Max Stillman, a gruff security consultant, appears without warning at the office. It seems a colleague with whom Walker once had an affair has disappeared after paying a very large death benefit to an impostor. Stillman wants to find and convict her; Walker is convinced the woman is innocent. Now Walker teams up with Stillman on an urgent north-by-northeast race---relentlessly leading to a pay-off that just might shock the life out of him.©2008 Thomas Perry (P)2009 Tantor Genre Fiction Mystery Private Investigators Psychological Suspense Thriller & Suspense Exciting

Wish I could give 4.5 stars. Kind of a loose story line but kept pulling me back in. Ending gets a little funky though.

A great, solid build-up thriller sprinkled with humor and with a fine cast of characters. If you like the Butcher's Boy series, Strip or Metzger's Dog you'll surely like this one.
Michael Kramer is the perfect narrator.

On Butcher's Boy class

This is a great story... I won't repeat what has already been said in the publisher's summary and by other reviewers. I enjoyed this story about how death benefits are stolen right from under the noses of the insurance company's officials. There is plenty of action while the investigators and the thieves tries to trap each other. There are plenty of twists and turns. This story held my interest and attention throughout. I love Thomas Perry's writing, very fluid and believable. Michael Kramer's narration is always on point, his voice is perfect for Perry's stories. I highly recommend this story!

I've listened to a couple of other Thomas Perry books and liked them and bought this one. Maybe the first 30 minutes was a little slow but then the story picked up (or I caught on!) and then couldn't listen enough! Michael Kramer was 5 stars all the way with the narration. I am looking for more by this duo of Perry & Kramer.

Perfect narrator for this book - loved it!

Great multi-level mystery. Takes a natural turn to the solution. Great main investigator who has lots of life advice for his assistant. Good humor and reasonable explanations.

Great story wrapped around great characters

I thoroughly enjoyed the book! While lengthy, in most cases I appreciated the “color” Perry added Re each character’s thoughts, the surroundings, etc. Near the end I thought I knew the answer, and I was right, but I still really enjoyed the unfolding and the various plot twists clear through the end. I recommend this book, and look fwd to my next Thomas Perry read.

Kept my attention from start to finish! I hated to to pauses in listening!

Characters seemed more real than many spy or crazy scenarios and because it was something new to me. Hope it’s a series

More probable than many
