About this listen

As co-owners of Eastport's beloved waterfront bakery The Chocolate Moose, Jake and Ellie know their customers expect them to cream the competition. But they're really just in it for fun, hoping to get Jake's daughter-in-law baking again. Those plans collapse when fearsome local curmudgeon Alvin Carter is murdered, and every crumb of evidence points to Tiptree family friend - and all-around sweet guy - Billy Breyer.

Billy's sisters beg Jake and Ellie to prove his innocence. After all, lots of folks had gone sour on Alvin - the only thing the retired lawyer liked better than bilking widows was swindling orphans, and several victims of his long-ago schemes still lived in Eastport. But just as the ladies begin sifting through the suspects, a series of grass fires blaze across the island, cutting off access to the mainland. Could someone be trying to hide the truth about Alvin's murder?

Now, Jake and Ellie will need all their courage - and an extra dash of that down-east Maine stubbornness - to sniff out the real killer before anyone else gets burned....

Love this series but...

I started with the Home Repair is Homicide and then the Death by Chocolate series. I got over some of the inconsistencies between the 2 series of books, but honestly I feel Jake is way over the top clumsy in this one.... just over the top.

Very enjoyable with an exciting finish.

Enjoyed this story along with Susan Boyce's reading which is not overly excited. Will listen to more of the series.

A Lively Romp

I really like these stories. They manage to be light but also have plenty of action and suspense. The characters are believable. The situations don't stretch credulity too much. So many mystery stories are gory. I appreciate that these are mostly not.

Sarah Graves is on Fire —

Another great book by Sarah Graves.
She gives us so much in her writings through Jacobia and Ellie and her wonderfully scripted characters.

Helping others
Understanding others’ needs
Allowing each person to be able to make their own life decisions
And solving several other issues
ALL while discovering who murdered the victim and the how and the why.

A second dead body - or is it?

Loved the ending as well as she ties up any loose ends - all except . . . .
What happened to the cat in the end??

Well, a cat does have its nine lives so I am sure all is well.
LOL

READY for another Death By Chocolate Cozy Mystery!!!

Jake’s character

This book and the prior one in the series portray Jake as so inept that everything that happens comes off as unbelievable.

Lots of action!

This author doesn't just deliver action when the time come for it. She doubles down and creates even more drama. In the midst of one set of troubles, enters a completely separate problem that makes the first problem all the more scary. I always remind myself that this is a cozy mystery and that help is on the way!

Dry, Bland, and Awkward Narration

I have read the other books in the chocolate series, but this is the first I have listened to.
This narrator sucks all the Maine flavor out of it and turns a great story into something dry, bland, and awkward sounding. I’m going to have to return this one and read it myself.

The narrator for the original series was AMAZING!!! Her accents were spot on, so the characters were charming and the dialog made sense. If you can’t get her back, please find someone who can do these stories justice.
