Publisher's summary

Between her boisterous sons and a house full of Poodles, there's never a dull moment for Melanie Travis. But no matter how hectic life gets, she can always pick up the scent of a howling good mystery - and she'll stop at nothing to dig up the truth. It's summer in Connecticut, and Melanie's life has become an endless string of dog shows, soccer camp, and the antics of her energetic toddler. She hardly has time to pay much attention to her Aunt Peg's new protégé, Nick Walden, a self-proclaimed "dog whisperer" with an uncanny gift for decoding dog-speak. The well-heeled dog owners of Fairfield County are lapping up his alleged talents, anxious to discover exactly what their pampered pets are thinking - that is until the pooches start spilling their secrets. When Nick is discovered dead in his home, his sister Claire enlists Melanie to help track down the killer. Now, as she juggles the demands of marriage and motherhood - not to mention her six beloved Poodles - Melanie can scarcely even begin to nose through the growing list of suspects. But just when she thinks she's barking up the wrong tree, she'll find herself face to face with a purebred murderer.

best narrator

i listened to all these books up through Death of a Dog Wisperer..... narrated by Jessica Almassey. She brought the life to the characters and change of voices was great.
After this book they changed narrator's and I can't listen to rest of the series because it's not the same. this narrator is good but not the same liveliness Almassey brought to books. I'm disappointed to have to stop and not finish series

Love the series.

I love the series and have listened to them all in the past month or so. A few times the details have been skewed in subsequent books but nothing major. Its probably more noticeable to me because I've listened to them in such a short time. Bertie's voice changed in this book also. My main complaint in the books is that they act like Melanie being upset about things is ridiculous. Telling her son to keep a secret is not ok. she would have been fine about the girlfriend had she been told about her. the secret was the issue. Sam not telling her he had an ex wife? Also a big deal and she was justified in being upset. I seriously love the books and listen to them while working and those are my only criticisms. Have a great listen!

Blended family aspect.

I really loved Nick and the blended family aspect and the story, the talk about the different houses, and the cute sibling scenes. The incredible ring was a delightful addition as well.

Didn't see it coming

Love being a part of the story's unseen family. But, I didn't see the twists coming! I enjoy this series. I may have to get a poodle, yet.

great series, need a different narrator

What made the experience of listening to Death of a Dog Whisperer the most enjoyable?

I have loved this series when I read it, but this narrator is just wrong for the series. Her voice is not the right one for this series. I have to turn it off way before I'm ready to stop because her voice gets on my nerves.

What three words best describe Jessica Almasy’s voice?

grating, child-like, annoying

Any additional comments?

I do not like to give a bad review but felt I honestly needed to voice my opinion because perhaps the author might find a different narrator if several people gave their honest opinions.

Took too long to get to the point

This is the first book I've listened to from this author. I've read that it's better to start from the beginning of the series, that may be true. I love dogs, I like mysteries. It wasn't that the characters weren't likeable, this story just took too long to get to the point and seemed to ramble onto bunny trails. Too much about the relationships and family stuff thrown in there. Some people may like that writing style, I guess I like books that get into the mystery and don't talk to much about that peripheral stuff. I didn't finish the book. Narrator has unusual voice, some might not like it, but once you got used to her voice I thought she did a good job.
