About this listen

Death of a Hollow Man is the second instalment in the Midsomer Murders series, featuring an exclusive foreword by John Nettles (ITV’s DCI Tom Barnaby).

Backstage nerves are fraying, and revenge is on its way. As Causton Amateur Dramatic Society prepares for the opening night of Amadeus, in the wings Esslyn Carmichael suspects his wife is having an affair with the leading man. And where better to settle scores than the stage?

Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby expects an evening of entertainment, attending only to show support for his wife. But when someone turns Esslyn’s final grand gesture into a gruesome coup de theatre, Barnaby’s investigation suddenly begins.

Excellent character development

Murder mysteries are hardly about the murder- they’re just an excuse for reserved and nominally polite people to pry into the inner lives of others. It’s wonderful to hear details like the types of pictures a minor character has hanging on his walls.

More than just a mystery.

From the beginning of the book, the reader is immersed in to a world of theater of emotions of character of conflict. Each character is so well-rounded that you know them, Each situation is so well described that you are there. The murder doesn’t happen until over halfway into the book, when the Inspector steps in. Really good read. Unexpected ending.

Can't beat Midsummer Murders!

I love Caroline Graham stories, she touches on sensitive relationships without being crass or in your face. Her characters are well developed and interesting. You will laugh and feel sorrow. John Hopkins is a wonderful narrator. You can tell he loves these books as well.

The development of the characters

.The characters in most mysteries are described only as they relate to the plot. They are paper characters, silhouettes used to lead the reader as they solve the puzzles intricate to the plot and the strategy they use to solve the mystery and finally revealed the murderer. I enjoy it good mystery..

However, this author provides a description of the characters so you understand their emotions, and better understand their relationship to one other and how this pertains to solving the mystery

So good; the TV series pales in comparison—nothing like the novels.

New favorite author! Don't miss out on this amazing literary talent!

Nothing else is like these mysteries! They demonstrate a uniquely rich, full-bodied, & wonderful depth to the characters and talent on the part of the author. The story carries me happily along as the language challenges my mind to truly listen to, and digest, each word. When it was finished, I felt a sense of gratitude as the characters and story continued to charm and warm me. The author kept me guessing to the end of the mystery, but then continued to develop the main characters of the story. As a result, I was satisfied when the ending finally came. I suppose I'm becoming a "Toadie" of Ms. Grahams. LOL

The performance by the actor reading the story was just perfect! The many different voices helped me keep the different characters separated. I could rave on and on about this performer but you just need to hear him for yourself .
