Publisher's summary

When a killer strikes just before flan time, beloved food critic Hayley Snow is forced to sniff out the killer before someone else bites the dust.

Hayley Snow, fiery food critic for Key Zest magazine, has just landed a ticket to one of the most prestigious events in Key West: a highbrow three-day conference at the Harry Truman Little White House. Even though she'll be working the event helping her mother's fledgling catering business, there's plenty of spicy gossip to go around. But just before her mother's decadent flan is put to the test, Key West's most prized possession, Hemingway's Nobel Prize gold medal for The Old Man and the Sea, is discovered stolen from its case.

Unsavory suspicions point to Gabriel, a family friend and one of the new busboys working the event, who mysteriously goes missing moments later. Anxious to clear his name, Gabriel's family enlists Hayley to help find him, but right as they begin their search, his body is found stabbed to death in the storeroom.

Hayley has no shortage of suspects to interrogate and very little time before the killer adds another victim to the menu in nationally best-selling author Lucy Burdette's delectable eighth Key West Food Critic mystery, Death on the Menu.

Starts Slow But Turns Out Enjoyable

So, this story starts a little slow. It's not poorly written, just slow starting. But I love mysteries and I love food, so I kept listening, and I'm glad I did! The food described made my mouth water, and I came to really like the heroine. The plot was intriguing, and I learned some things too about the culture and background of Key West and its relations with Cuba.

Another plus for me was the inclusion of Hemingway and his house. I got to tour that house once on a vacation with my husband, many years ago. It was so much fun revisiting those memories as I listened to this story!

A last appreciation - and it may be a funny one - but I liked that her investigation was not cliche. She didn't think the police were incompetent or 'needed' her help, and when she found anything out she gave it to them. So many heroines in mystery novels are very - vigilante. Her involvement made perfect sense to me, and while she WAS the person who figured it out it felt very real to me how it happened.

Good story, subpar Narration

If the reader is going to continue with this series, she MUST learn to pronounce Spanish words and phrases. The mispronunciation of words like flan is jarring and significantly diminished my enjoyment of the book.

Great but…..

I might be a prude but this would have received 5* all the way if not for the few ugly words.it did not need the cuss words to make it great. For myself I think it was a really great book except for that…
Just my humble opinion

Rambling storyline

It seems to bounce around allot and the storyline rambles on in places. I’ve listened to several murder mysteries and wasn’t impressed by this author.

Who trots?

One could make a drinking game of how many times the author uses the word trot. And speaking of which, who trots? Horses, dogs, cats… Maybe. But not human beings. I think she’s meant to come across charming, but often the protagonist comes across rather dumb.

Fun and Informative!

Pleasantly surprised!
A lot more meat on the bone than most "cozies".
Very enjoyable!

simple and cute

the story was okay. a bit entertaining. it was something I listened to while I was going to sleep so I can't say it was all that entertaining or surprising in the way the plot twisted and turned.
