About this listen

A competitive diver and an ace swimmer jump into forbidden waters in this steamy college romance from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis.

Scarlett Vandermeer is swimming upstream. A Junior at Stanford and a student-athlete who specializes in platform diving, Scarlett prefers to keep her head down, concentrating on getting into med school and on recovering from the injury that almost ended her career. She has no time for relationships—at least, that’s what she tells herself.

Swim captain, world champion, all-around aquatics golden boy, Lukas Blomqvist thrives on discipline. It’s how he wins gold medals and breaks records: complete focus, with every stroke. On the surface, Lukas and Scarlett have nothing in common. Until a well-guarded secret slips out, and everything changes.

So they start an arrangement. And as the pressure leading to the Olympics heats up, so does their relationship. It was supposed to be just a temporary, mutually satisfying fling. But when staying away from Lukas becomes impossible, Scarlett realizes that her heart might be treading into dangerous water...

Editorial Review

I dove headfirst into this listen
After that headline I will try to keep my water puns to a minimum, but let me just say that someone may need to douse you with ice water after listening to Ali Hazelwood’s latest. Deep End has all the brainy chemistry (physical and otherwise) I’ve come to love and expect from Hazelwood’s novels ... with a healthy dose of BDSM tossed in. Stanford diving star Scarlett Vandermeer has been laser-focused on coming back from a season-ending injury and getting herself into med school. Romance, relationships, even friendships don’t really factor into that equation. Swim captain and world champion Lukas Blomqvist is similarly focused, until a secret thrusts Lukas and Scarlett together, and their mutual attraction bubbles to the surface (sorry, last one). Performed by Thérèse Plummer with Ben Holtzmuller, Deep End is filled with STEMinist energy, a few Easter eggs for longtime fans, and enough steam to quench your thirst[traps] this Valentine’s season. —Katie O., Audible Editor

Clever writing and story; male Swedish accent distracting

Really enjoyed this book. Writing was great and story very entertaining. I have listened to many audiobooks
and know how much the narration can impact how enjoyable the experience can be for the listener. So much so, I actually seek out certain narrators as I am sure many audiobook listeners do. In this case, I thought that the Swedish male accent was distracting. All other narration was phenomenal! Wish that the author would have taken a different direction with this character's voice.

This book could have been 1/3rd shorter

Main character is infuriating at times, but as always the guy carries the story. Great narrators

Everything I needed and more!

The way I connected with this book on so many point is insane. Yes it was spicy and yes the MMC IS EVERYTHING… But the woman in me that puts so much pressure on herself to succeed felt safe, felt heard, and felt understood. The reassurance that the FMC was enough was everything. And having a male narrator for duet style narration even though it’s single pov was the best decision. I absolutely love it.

Love love love

Wow, this book is the best I've read so far in 2025—it's fantastic! The maturity of the themes, the communication between characters, and the medical banter are all top-notch. The narration is perfect, and the accents are spot-on! The audiobook was exceptionally produced. From the beginning, the story had me hooked; I couldn’t put it down. I engaged in immersive reading and listening because the conversations were so engaging that I didn't want to miss a thing.

I loved trying to predict what would happen next, only to be pleasantly surprised when I was completely wrong. After reading so many books, it's refreshing to find a story that isn't predictable and discusses taboo themes so clearly and honestly. I honestly feel like I learned a lot from this book; it's great all around! Ali has truly created a remarkable work of art.

A cozy but kinky time

Overall: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Plot: ⭐⭐⭐
Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
World Building: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Ending: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The best way I can describe this book is it's a cozy spicy read.
Maybe it hit a little close to home for me on some of the trauma and mental health aspects.
⭐I DO NOT SAY THAT AS A BAD THING.⭐

Pretty predictable but not in a bad way.
The spice was GREAT especially after some of the less vanilla but not great reads I have come across.

I think what I really enjoyed the most was the well-balanced writing. Spice to Plot was perfect.

The male narrator, the tension

Finished it and then immediately started it over. One of my all time favorite audio books. Introduction to Ali Hazelwood, safe to say I’m a fan. Also the male narrator was 1000/10. Did all of the good things to my brain so thank you for that sir 😍🔥❤️

Thank you for this book!

The performance was spot on. I love that Ali’s books’ male readers aren’t silly. There’s a realism to their performance that is missing from audiobooks by other authors. Thérèse is consistently top notch. Ali, as always, is witty, intelligent, inclusive, good at developing main and auxiliary characters with depth, and allows readers a glimpse into the world of dedicated people who put in the work for the success they seek. I hope there’s always a next book in the wings.
