About this listen

An Indie Next and a Hall of Fame LibraryReads Pick!

A forbidden, secret affair proves that all’s fair in love and science—from New York Times bestselling author Ali Hazelwood.

Rue Siebert might not have it all, but she has enough: a few friends she can always count on, the financial stability she yearned for as a kid, and a successful career as a biotech engineer at Kline, one of the most promising start-ups in the field of food science. Her world is stable, pleasant, and hard-fought. Until a hostile takeover and its offensively attractive front man threatens to bring it all crumbling down.

Eli Killgore and his business partners want Kline, period. Eli has his own reasons for pushing this deal through—and he’s a man who gets what he wants. With one burning exception: Rue. The woman he can’t stop thinking about. The woman who's off-limits to him.

Torn between loyalty and an undeniable attraction, Rue and Eli throw caution out the lab and the boardroom windows. Their affair is secret, no-strings-attached, and has a built-in deadline: the day one of their companies will prevail. But the heart is risky business—one that plays for keeps.

it lacked the chemistry and deep connection that characterizes Ali’s characters

A 2.75 ⭐️ maybe? I mean it was not bad, but it lacked the chemistry and deep connection that characterizes Ali’s characters. I think she traded it for more smut? I don’t mind smut but there was barely anything more than that between the main characters. She should have added more chapters of them connecting in a more profound level just to balance the smut out, and make it more believable that they fell for one another given the fact that she was not capable of such a thing until him. Because to me it was more infatuation than love.

Jason Clarke's voice is insane.

Jason Clarke's voice is insane. I enjoyed the story a lot, but I feel like this type of story could have developed more organically through either a longer timespan or additional books. either way, enjoyed it very much. I think this may be Ali Hazelwood's spiciest story to date. 🫡

Meh..

This was my least favorite of her books. I like the story line but skipped through huge chunks. She's a good author and I could see so much potential in certain parts and glimpses of wit, but often the dialogue etc veered towards shallow interaction/ thoughts & sex- so I skipped my way through.

incredible spice, story, and narration. FINALLY an Ali Hazelwood duet!

I am massive Ali Hazelwood stan. I have every format of every book she has ever written. And I have never been moved to write a review until now. And mostly, it is because as Ali warned, totally this is very different for her. And while I think it might be slower to win over the fans of her usual flavor, I want to scream from the rooftops about how much I love this. How excited I am to see her exploring (I loved Bride too) and how sad I am to already see some more negative reviews as this isn't her usual style. I suppose I can't say whether or not you will love it. As a demi who is convinced every Ali Hazelwood lead is also a demi, this reverses the script a bit. The sex comes first, and the emotional intimacy is hindered time and time again. I love both of the voice actors and recognized them from previous audiobooks I love. It did take me a second to adjust to sweet Olive's voice as a sort of tough, in charge, emotionally distant and only interested in sex FMC. I think reading it would have given me a different perspective on Rue than hearing it first. But I still really enjoyed it.

Some highlights:
Two main characters "avoiding" emotional intimacy while also clearly building it in their unique way that is right for them.

A kinky man who loves domination and control, but who also is very aware and respectful of women and their boundaries. I loved that he had such a positive and healthy relationship with his ex fiance, and it was a very mature take to address the true love that was there and yet not being right for each other. The whole "I've never truly loved before you" trope is great, but not very nuanced or realistic.

FMC that struggles deeply with feeling imperfect, wrong, or sometimes downright horrible about the thoughts she has about her family and they ways they had let her down. I love that take from Ali, who's FMC's tend to be very accepting of their burdens in life and internalize it. I loved seeing Rue be honest about how shitty she thought her situation was, and while she still did her best for her family, she felt fair and valid resentment as well.

A unique spin on Ali's usual stem lords. I'm still letting this one ruminate.

HOT. AS. HELL.

I hope people love this book as much as I did. Humans grow and change. I have watched people be hesitant to the development of an artist my whole life, whether it's a new genre on an album or a book. I'm so happy Ali wrote this book, and that I now get to enjoy Rue and Eli and some of her best lines she has ever written. I'm looking forward to more like it from her.

And please Ali, more duets!!

So good!!

Ali is an auto buy for me, has been since her debut, The Love Hypothesis! Rue & Eli’s story was beautiful, steamy, and heartfelt, with just the right amount of angst and chemistry 💜 the duet audio was perfection!

Not in Love with this story

Usually, I love Ali’s books. Unfortunately for this one, I read Bride and Check & Mate before it. This one lacked the same sizzle and fire between the MCs that her other books have. There is just something about Rue that I do not like, so that doesn’t help either. This wasn’t a favorite for me, so on to the next.

Powerhouse writing and steamy narration

Ali H.’s writing is impeccable. I will read anything and everything she writes. And Jason Clarke can read me a-nee-thing. He brings the characters to life like no other.

Spicy Read

Not your typical love story, I loved MMC narrator Jason Clarke. I think MFC Callie was spot on in delivering the personality of the MFC, distant, not overly emotional. I enjoyed the story, not the same type of romance book I've been reading lately, as usual with Ali Hazelwood, this is also STEM related which I enjoyed. Very Spicy read.

Ali Hazelwood has redeemed herself

I wasn’t into Ali’s latest STEM-ist books and even doubted I’d keep reading her new publications. But between this and Bride, I’ll never doubt her again. This was so good 🫶🏼
