About this listen

It’s the end of the road, and no one is safe.

After navigating a treacherous country torn apart by an EMP, Colby Riker struggles to adjust to the harsh existence back in Humboldt. When faced with a dangerous decision that could destroy his family and the community for good, he must face the ghosts of his past if any of them are to make it out alive.

Will anyone survive?

As mounting pressure from a series of deadly attacks outside their town causes the residents of Eureka to scramble for answers and protection, Sheriff Dan Wilder discovers the threat might be closer to home than he thought.

The truth will be horrifying.

Colby made it out of LA. He survived the journey home. He’ll risk his life to save his community. But will the truth of the event 10 years ago cause him to run again or stand shoulder-to-shoulder with family?

Defend the Homestead is the third and final explosive book in A Powerless World saga. This pause-resisting, post-apocalyptic EMP thriller series is about two ordinary, feuding families fighting for survival in a world gone dark.

Tensions Boil Over in Humboldt County

Book 3 of the ‘Powerless World’ series centers the action on Humboldt County with the ongoing battles for control. Riker matriarch Martha is still executing her secret scheme that she’s cooked up. The Strickland clan, as a whole, are giant misogynists. Turns out militia captain Evans is more megalomaniacal (amd idiotic) than originally perceived. Obliviousness rules the day for Sheriff Dan Wilder. And brothers Colby and Jesse Riker end up defying their mother due to very similar personal circumstances. Hang on to your seats, the ride’s about to get even rougher for our (anti)heroes.

Jack Hunt writes the best tension-building action scenes in the post-apocalyptic genre. This book is a nail-biter from beginning to end. Hunt even delivers a startling OMG moment in the middle of the story. It certainly elicited a strong reaction from me (including tears). This whole series has me thoroughly invested. The summary states this book is the conclusion of the series (and it IS a nice ending), but Hunt has subsequently added 2 more books for readers to enjoy. I’ll definitely be reading them too.

Miles Meili is my favorite post-apocalyptic narrator. He tells Hunt’s stories in a way that make me believe they’re real. He delivers a cadence and tone that matches Hunt’s words perfectly.

Good end to the series

I listened the the 1st book in this series also, I didn't realize there was another until this one came out. I will have to go back and listen to the 2nd one now. This was a good ending to it, I thought they did a good job tying everything together. I will probably look for some other books by this author.

Eureka!

The feud between the Rikers and the Stricklands heat up a notch due to one of the Rikers found dead. Captain Evans and his militia assume the bad guy's role in the farming community, their desire for the water and supplies fuel their aggression. Jessie and Nina are the Romeo and Juliet of the story. Colby returns home with Alicia in tow. Alicia is a dead ringer for Sky, Colby’s dead wife, and her appearance brings back a lot of memories and guilt among both the Rikers and the Stricklands. Sam, the Humboldt County Sheriff, hides his secret and is near useless in stopping the militia. The complex relationships within the County and the city of Eureka, the secret alliances, and underhanded dealings fuel the controversy until it comes to war. Captain Evans made an excellent villain and drove the story forward. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Jack Hunt seems to have an endless supply of twists and turns that keep sucking me in. It’s very well written and perfectly narrated! There are a few parts that I never would’ve seen coming and left my head spinning but it fit the story so well! 5/5 star would recommend!!!!!

3rd book in the series, as good as the 1st.

Hard to say which I liked better, the first book or the third! That is a rarity in book series generally speaking. What a great treat.

Mr. Hunt did a great job on this third book. Action and suspense through out. No burn out, just constant momentum. This was an excellent listen and I highly recommend the series. Looking forward to listening to the next one in the series.

The narrator, Miles Meili, has been great to listen to throughout the series. Excellent character definition, tone, pace and clarity.

Ok, But!

I understand that this is fiction, but making the Militia out to some group of power hungry monsters bent on killing is just so far fetched. Every Militia in the history of this nation has be made up of men and women just like me and you. No man with mother, wife or child would ever stand by and allow his so called superior to massacre women and children with out doing something about it. You might say that history is repleat with people who committed atrocities in the name of just following orders! Well that may be true of standing armies, but Militias are all volunteers who do the job to protect their families and their communities, not because they want power over others, like politicians! So when you write a story about drug lords and other criminals terrorizing the community, OK, but this is just leftist tripe. Sorry!
