Story
Self-made millionaire William Lasko has an eye for wealth and the ear of the President and a talent for using both to get whatever he wants. But the Economic Crimes Commission wants to bring the corrupt, untouchable Lasko down, and they enlist the services of straightlaced U.S. Attorney Christopher Paget to do it. Paget has to walk a tightrope, gathering enough evidence to nail Lasko without alienating the White House, knowing full well that men like Lasko make their own rules - including the elimination of enemies like him.

Meet Elizabeth Carleton, a fascinating woman who is not only a famous concert pianist, but is also married to a wealthy international business tycoon, Timothy Carleton. She is the envy of all until her perfect life falls apart literally in a heartbeat: Timothy Carleton is stabbed in the chest with an ice pick and Elizabeth is accused of his murder. Things rapidly go from bad to worse until a surprise witness appears to give her an airtight alibi. The jury finds her not guilty. The only thing is: She’s never met the man who testified on her behalf.

What Happened?
When reading Richard North Patterson I expect a compelling story, one that is detailed with characters the reader cares about. Perhaps Degree of Guilt is all of that and was victimized by the abridgement and the reading by Mr. Howard. I suspect these are the reasons this collaberation did not work for me. Ken Howard's reading left one to wonder if he was bored, or in a rush to be somewhere else. It was clear he didn't care about the story. Is this what they mean when critics use the term "He phoned it in"? His tone never changed throughout the reading and was reminescent of a history professor who was repeating the same lecture for the one hundreth time. Perhaps I'll look at an unabridged version as the story has possibilities.
