About this listen

Catie is on her way back to Earth after having settled the Fazulan slaves when the wormhole her ship is traveling in collapses. They are diverted to another system, where big chunks are flying around. They rescue a ship and find themselves in the middle of a series of mysteries. Catie resigns herself to continuing her role as Princess Catie and helping these people solve their problems so that this new system can join the Delphi League. And Catie gets exactly what she asked for.

Ensign

I really enjoy these books and am very happy that they stick with the excellent narrator. However, I dearly wish that she would learn to pronounce “ensign” correctly. For a while I thought maybe it was a Canadian thing, but I have been unable to find any indication that they pronounce it as enn-sign. Ms. Gerd, it is pronounced en-sun. Ask any naval officer. ;-).

'Blanton' brand disappointment

Earlier in the book series, a one might claim a subtle effort was made for "normalizing" drug use and stacking glory on Katy McCormack. Most of this story is interesting with a little excitement and a little science fiction, but then in typical Bob Blanton fashion Katy is dehumanized and made the object model for casual sex, instead of an intrepid space adventure girl. The whole mood of the story seems centered around lowering the reader's moral expectations of humanity, while simultaneously pretending the world might be better for it.

I put off reading further than somewhere around book ten in this series because I was getting bored at the story focusing on dysfunctional social by play and the super improbable feats of Katy. Now, I see I was right to have little hope for this story, since Katy is no longer the star of the show, but is instead a model for mediocrity gaining unhelpful praise and glory. All that has been offered to her seems to reinforce notions of confidence in choices one could characterize as politically correct self defilement. I still want to know how the story goes because at least Bob has a few good science fiction ideas, but the whole experience is far too disappointing for me to truly enjoy the experience or want to read it again.

If you are a true science fiction fan, heed the warning and don't expect too much from the series. It seems like the really interesting science fiction is sprinkled on the series like a salad dressing, while the rest of the story is a controlled effort to justify poorly reasoned life choices.

What kind of romance is that?

Not much in the way of romance here.... Catie and company rescue a Prince.... Her first time is a fling with a Prince. Really? ugh Seems like she is just trying to get back at her father for making her go on diplomatic missions as a Princess.
