Publisher's summary

The New York Times best-selling author of Dead End Street returns with Nell Pratt discovering one of Philadelphia's darker buried secrets....

When a summer intern at the Preservation Society discovers an aged document hidden in the binding of an antique book, Society President Nell Pratt is intrigued by the possibilities: Is it a valuable historic document or just a useless scrap of paper? When analysis reveals that it's a hand-drawn map of one of Philadelphia's oldest neighborhoods, Nell learns that the area is being excavated for a new real-estate development and may hold long-buried secrets from the city's historic heyday.

Determined to get to the bottom of the map's origin and what it might tell her about the mysterious plot of land, Nell will have to contend with a construction company owner who disappears, a former Society board member who's harbored a dark secret her entire life, and a remarkable discovery that may have the dead turning over in their graves....

a little niche in terms of market imo

So if you're a real history buff and specifically of American history, you'd probably enjoy this 1. I'm not really into American history (altho at least the author acknowledged the glamourisation and mythology the Yanks tell about their history) so I found all the politics boring and the plot anticlimactic (I waited the whole book for something to happen and it never did). I should add that despite my bias against American 'history' I've enjoyed other books in this series - it's this book particularly.
But I enjoy this writer's style so it was fine. Better than other crap I've been finding on audible lately.
I'm not fussed on this narrator but speeding up slightly helps. I wish this author would write about some interesting American history, like the war with the Spanish or Native American history

Not my fav of the series

I had a hard time getting into the story, it didn’t have a lot in the way of character or story development. There wasn’t really a mystery just an event and done. I love the series but this one did not do it for me

An interesting historical with relatable characters.

This was an interesting story with the setting in Philadelphia. The discovery of 400 year old bodies as well as the discovery of British cannons hidden by patriot.

Mystery with Historical Details

I'm a big fan of this author. This series is a lot different than her others. The County Cork Mystery series is my favorite. That said, this one is interesting, too. Based in Philadelphia where much of America's early history began, the discovery of dead bodies on a construction site brings in detectives and history buffs alike. The childhood memories of a resident of the area and seeing a dead body in the exact same spot brings more intrigue to the story. Although this isn't my favorite of Sheila Connolly's series, I will certainly check out more in this series.

Don’t buy it

Came across this book and was excited to read it. Until I started listening to the audible. The writing was poor, the story had key portions that were completely unbelievable, and then there was a thrown together ending that left me confused and angry that the key points were not resolved. Maybe she plans a 9th book that will continue the story, I don’t know as this is the first book of hers that I’ve read. This book didn’t seem to carry on the previous book however. There were some great historical events that are based on fact, but the added events were totally unbelievable which made the true history appear to be fiction. Seriously, a house that was built over 200 years ago and has been vacant for decades with no one discovering what is in the crawl space? A contractor who is not concerned with the derelict buildings across the street from his condominium/apartment building project? The list goes on...

Not my cup of tea this time.

But, I have really enjoyed the previous books in this series. As usual, the narrator is great.

History Textbook with a Little Mystery

The story drones on and on about historical events and facts. Very little development of a complete storyline. Characters are flat. The performance is the only “saving grace” for this book.

Pretty dull.

I fell asleep over and over while trying to listen to this book. I think I’ll return it.
