About this listen

Clary's books have over 1000 five-star ratings.

Her finger can ignite a magical flame. But only male mages deal with elemental magic such as fire, and all mages are men. Hannah is a young woman. The mage who is whispered to be her father is returning, and she intends to display her flame where he can see it so he will know she is his daughter.

Her life changes with the dowsing of that flame. She has no friends, an uncertain future, and jealous enemies at every turn. But five years of working in the morning kitchen of the palace while listening to the gossip and cruel whispers serves her well. Her wit, sharp tongue, and determination are honed to a razor edge, and those experiences prepare her for the future. Will her father recognize her? How will her life change?

I really enjoyed this book. It's not the genre I usually read but I was absolutey drawn into the storyline. The author develops his characters in a way that makes you feel like you are there in the story with them. There were some great plot twists also. I would recommend this book and will be reading more from Leroy Clary!

Excellent Story!

The story line has several twists, and often sly Hannah is the only one left standing. I enjoyed the story immensely and look forward to next book in the series.

Never heard of a mage before, but the story quickly sets out the conditions and customs in this medieval imaginary time of magic, spells Kings and Knights. Stories of magic and magical powers are difficult to feed to modern day readers, but Clary has developed them in a slow detailed process that has you feeling very comfortable... Until the intrigue of royalty and knights and the fear of this young girl, who we quickly begin rooting for, as she wriggles, and fights off the threats of those who obviously fear her. This story is the beginning of a complex adventure of a remarkable girl. You will be drawn into this tale and left hungry for more. Narrator does an excellent job of keeping the excitement alive. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

Well written, exciting, mysterious

The Good…I actually think the narrator did a decent job. I still always question why publisher’s use a male narrator when the main character is female (and in this book she is 11). But most other characters were male so I guess it balances out.

The Rest…This book is Harry Potter meet’s Game of Thrones, buy less believable. I long for the days where an author can make me believe that a child can overcome some of the ridiculous situations that authors come up with.

Were we spoiled with Harry Potter growing up, or am I getting old?

I might be getting old.
