About this listen

A marine archaeologist and a salvager join forces to search for a legendary treasure in this novel that takes readers to the depths of the Caribbean and the heights of passion and suspense - from #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts.

Tate Beaumont has a passion for treasure-hunting. Over the years, she and her father have uncovered many fabulous riches, but one treasure has always eluded them: Angelique’s Curse - a jeweled amulet heavy with history, dark with legend, and tainted with blood. In order to find this precious artifact, the Beaumonts reluctantly form a partnership with salvagers Buck and Matthew Lassiter.

As the Beaumonts and Lassiters pool their resources to locate Angelique’s Curse, the Caribbean waters darken with shadowy deceptions and hidden threats. Their partnership is placed in jeopardy when Matthew refuses to share information - including the truth behind his father’s mysterious death. For now, Tate and Matthew continue their uneasy alliance - until danger and desire begin to rise to the surface...

Great story but n Ed’s different narration...

This is a very good story with great twists. But, the narrator isn’t very good. Just my opinion, but I’d like to hear it with less whininess... worth a listen as is, though!

Good read

This was a fairly good story. About half way through I started getting frustrated with the back and forth “I won’t have sex with you,” “OK, I’ll have sex with you,” “no, I won’t have sex with you” drama in the story. It was tiresome. The story did have a good ending. I wish more of the enchantment in the ending could have been woven through the story. The voice actor was excellent. This was not just a reading of the book; the actor was able to differentiate the characters so well that the listener could easily identify the speaker.

Very theatrical. Nora has something against women

Always makes the woman out to be an airhead. But this reader was too theatrical

Good story, didn't like reading

Did not like the character voices. The southern accent was not realistic. The other voices were just okay.

Not Nora's Best

What did you like best about The Reef? What did you like least?

I'm a big fan of Nora Roberts, and have read most of her books (so long as they weren't published by Harlequin). Most of her books describe a strong female character with realistic character traits - her male characters are the same. I did not like the two leads in the book, and found that their 'lines' were very cheesey. I'll just chalk this up to it being a book written by her a long time ago, because she had really developed her craft as a writer.

Would you ever listen to anything by Nora Roberts again?

Yes

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

No

Disappointed

The story overall was not very good. The narrator for Buck was unbearable to listen to. The character Matthew was rude and mean to Tate…have no idea why she carries torch for him!

Narrator’s voice is annoying

While the story is typically NR and so fun and satisfyingly frivolous, the narration spoiled it. Her voice for the main character - supposed to sound like ‘honey’ according to the story - had a whine and falsely high-pitched edge which made her hard to bear. It made it hard to imagine anyone falling for someone or taking them seriously with that voice, which undermined the plot line.
