About this listen

Don Quixote features two of the most beloved characters in classical literature. Don Quixote and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, embark on comical exploits that are as charming today as they were when the book was published nearly 400 years ago.

After reading chivalric romances, Don Quixote becomes infatuated with the idea of being a heroic knight and with the help of his squire sets out to do exactly that. Although Sancho’s adventures continually get him into trouble, he grows and learns from those mishaps, becoming a character that will enchant the listener long after the last words.

When originally published, Don Quixote was what would today be considered experimental fiction. It would go on to influence some of the most prolific authors in history, including Sterne, Dickens, Melville, as well as a host of others. Modern scholars consider Don Quixote to be the most influential work of literature to come out of the Spanish Golden Age.

Eventually sweeps you away

When i first started reading this I thought I’d never make it through, and i put it away for awhile. Then I picked it up again just to try and found myself totally charmed. Fell in love with Sancho Panza and all the characters really because they are so human. The language, once you get used to it carries the listener as if on a bubbling brook, so fluid and full of energy. The reader is excellent. A great match for the writing. I was terribly disappointed with the ending as i had become such a fan of knight errantry, but so it goes.

I love you, Don Quixote!

It has been said that this is the best book ever written (released in 1605!!). I wanted to understand WHY. How can a story begin with an unlikeable crazy person, and end with the same person declaring he is no longer crazy — and you want to say, “NO! DON’T SAY IT!!!” SPOILER ALERT: Don Quixote dies in the last chapter. It was so moving, I still feel the pain. Obviously this amazing Audible version is part of the reason why. The narrator made the story fun and easy to follow. AMAZING BOOK!

Performance helps drive the story

I am a physician and dabbled in Latin American Literature in College. Don Quixote was continually referenced as an important influence in the Latin American Boom, as well as, the development of the modern novel. I remember asking my professor if he would sponsor an independent study for me regarding the influences of Modern Latin american Literature- He looked me coldly in the eyes and said no.

As a clinician, researcher and father, I don't have much time to sit and read a book, however, I jog an hour every morning before work. Audible has been a great tool for me to continue my literary studies while I exercise. I just finished Don Quixote and can't believe it took me so long to get here. I am 55 years old. The story telling is great. The characters are fantastic. The story within the story is ingenious. My advice to people is just take a chance and dive into it. It is an easy listen,

One of the reasons it is so easy is that the Narrator is very animated. He changes the voice for different characters and brings them to life. I give kudos to Mr. Duquenoy. I look forward to listening to other works by him.

If you are an academic type and want to hear about the impact of Don Quixote, Yale sponsors a free audio course by Professor Roberto Gonzalez Echeverria. He has compiled his lectures in a book that is available on amazon.

Do yourself a favor- Dive in. You won't regret it.
