About this listen

The most influential work of the entire Spanish literary canon and a founding work of modern Western literature, Don Quixote is also one of the greatest works ever written. Hugely entertaining but also moving at times, this episodic novel is built on the fantasy life of one Alonso Quixano, who lives with his niece and housekeeper in La Mancha. Quixano, obsessed by tales of knight errantry, renames himself "Don Quixote" and, with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, goes on a series of quests. Many of these adventures, including tilting at windmills, are established in European literary consciousness.

Originally published in two volumes a decade apart (in 1605 and 1615), Don Quixote has been brought to life in its entirety in this audiobook.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book was amazing. The length was somewhat daunting but I decided to bite the bullet and listen to, what is often considered, the very first novel. From the beginning the characters are intriguing and engaging. You begin to see your great uncle on your mother's side in Don or your neighbor in Sancho. The picture is painted so clearly that you can imagine yourself standing next to the windmills as Don goes to battle or in the room when the books are being taken away. The feelings and emotions that the stories elicit are timeless and pure. Suitable for readers from young to old, it is a must for any library.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Sancho, for sure. Whenever someone does something in my life now that is somewhat dimwitted, I simply say "sancho sancho sancho" and I become more tollerant.

What about Roy McMillan’s performance did you like?

Perfect execution of emotion, charcter and enunciation. Very easy to listen to.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Umm... it is over 36 hours long so no. LOL

Four stars and not five for the story because there are many books I can name with a deeper plot.

Obviously a classic

The narrator was excellent and kept the story alive until the end. A classic that has taken me a long time to get to and finish. I am still not sure if I like it. The windmills are talked about a lot outside the book but are a tiny part of it. That he and sancho are beaten so much I find a little disturbing. Is it mocking the afflicted, I am left a little uneasy. All this said I am glad to have discovered it.

Strange mix of a story

I have always heard of this book, a classic, but have never read or heard it, until now. I found so many parts so funny and stupid too. Quite human, in all. I am not sure what I expected, but I did like it. The narrator is quite good. Not a lot of voices, but I can't imagine trying to perform a lot of voices. It IS 36+ hours, but well worth the listen, even if you only take one part at a time and then go back, soon, before you forget the story line. It's worth listening too, is what this long dissertation is saying.

QUITE FUNNY
