Publisher's summary

Two years ago, Paige Wilson watched helplessly as her brother Ryan was shot, right on her doorstep. He survived the attack, but he never fully recovered from the trauma. Stuck in a wheelchair, Ryan refuses to accept the life of a paraplegic. His idea of fun is coming up with new ways to torment Paige, who has sacrificed her own happiness to care for him. He feels she’s responsible for what happened to him that night, and he’s determined to make her life a living hell.

Pushed to her limits, Paige wants to turn her back on her brother’s abuse, but when she finally takes steps toward getting her life back, tragedy strikes. One day, she’s walking toward her freedom, and the next, she’s on the run. A terrible crime has been committed, and she might be in danger. She finds safety and a new life in the small town of Faypine, Maine. But someone knows her hiding place, and they are determined to use her secrets to tear her world apart. They will stop at nothing to get rid of her.

Good Story, Frustrating End

It's not that I don't like what happened in the end in general. It was the execution that irked me. The whole story was pretty well done, the writing style of the author sufficiently engagging...but once the big twist came, the writing got cheesy and hackneyed, and the events somewhat improbable. It particularly irks me when the villain's dialogue is written in as a way to haphazardly explain "and remember when this thing happened way back in the beginning and it seemed super mysterious? That was me, and here is how I did it. Aren't I so clever ... mwuhahaha". That's the fastest way to throw me out of an otherwise decent story, because it's such an overused device. It's almost like some of these authors have never met an evil person, so they write them as they imagine them based on all the other villains they've ever read. They handle the dialogue of the normal people fairly well, but when it comes to the baddy, they go off the rails. Cue maniacal laughter. Cue scene where every unexplained event is wrapped up and neatly explained (because, sure...doesn't every bad guy always explain themselves in depth to their victim??) IMO, that's lazy writing. If you wrote it well rather than just throwing in red herrings and mysterious shenanigans for the sake of being spooky, once the reveal happens, most of the pieces should pretty well fall into place anyway. I would honestly rather have a question or two unanswered than for the bad guy to get enough time and have enough inclination to have a massive brag scene where they tie it all up. Maybe that's just me...but it happens in so many books that it's just become ho hum.

Great book with great surprises

One of the best books I have read in some time. I look forward to more of LG Davis’s books.

I hate stories of stupid women.

It was all I could do to finish this book. I hate dumb main characters.
