About this listen

Who killed the killer?

In his brilliant and startling novel, Jonathan Kellerman, perennial best-selling author and premier proprietor of the psychological thriller, gives a sharp and timely twist to homicide's central question.

Someone has murdered euthanasia champion Dr. Eldon Mate - a self-styled Dr. Death responsible for scores of assisted suicides. In a burst of bloody irony, the killer chooses to dispatch the doctor in the back of Mate's own suicide van, hooking him up to the killing apparatus dubbed "the Humanitron" - and adding some butchering touches of his own. The case is assigned to veteran LAPD homicide detective Milo Sturgis, who turns once again to his friend Dr. Alex Delaware. But working this case raises a conflict of interest for Alex so profound that he can't even discuss it with Milo. The tension that develops between cop and psychologist further complicates an already baffling and complex murder investigation - one whose suspects include the families of Dr. Mate's "travelers", Mate's own son, and a psychopathic killer who relishes the geometry of death.

Dr. Death is a rich brew of unforgettable characters, labyrinthine plotting, pause-resisting prose, and the unique insights into the darkest corners of the human mind that have earned Jonathan Kellerman international accolades as the master of psychological suspense.

O’Henry, Hitchcock & Damn Human Complexity

The usual detective story cliche fan shall prematurely not figure exactly who the author pins to the “suicide-murder.”

There are just too many possibilities that explain but do not satisfy.

A fun in the end read ... not.

GREAT COMPLICATED STORY LINE

Really unhappy ALEXANDER ADAMS is no longer reading the Delaware series. Had a VERY hard time concentrating on this book. I mean, who the hell decided to give Milo a Bronx sounding voice!?!? Stupid!!! Milo is a big guy with a gravelly, masculine voice. After 7 books it should have been a given. I'm very despondent about continuing.

Also since I found out they made a movie of one of these books I couldn't believe they thought Ted Danson was Delaware!! God!!
Guys to play ALEX-- Ryan Reynolds, Orlando Bloom, Ben Affleck
guys to play Milo -- Vince Vaughan, Jon Favreau, mark ruffalo

Kellerman always delivers

I am on my second go with all the Kellerman books, some third time. I read most of them in print and bad eyes have me listening now. John Rubinstein sets the right tone for Alex and Milo. This one is rougher subject matter than most so it is not a book to take you on a crazy ride down Hollywood Blvd. The people in it could be your neighbors so it is more heartbreaking.

Dr Death

It was a interesting read, and moved along smoothly. I was surprised at the ending, the different twist was not what I expected. I believe after I thought it through, I liked it.

mixed reviews

strong beginning but ending was not satisfying it was as if plot emphasis went one direction and then at the end the killer was someone who had hardly been discussed.

The best Alex Delaware story

With the exception of one character I thought was left dangling, this was pretty close to perfect. Rubinstein's narration of Delaware and Sturgis is excellent, as always. I'm not certain I could listen to anyone else portray them.
Such a wealth of well-developed characters, and yet the story never tangles. The unwinding is flawless. I've read or listened to all of Kellerman's Alex Delaware novels. I believe this one is the best.
