About this listen

A thrilling YA fantasy novel from award-winning author Arthur Slade!

Carmen is a student at Red Assassin School. She's an expert at bladed weapons and poisons; and she's desperate to finish at the top of the class, ahead of her twin brother. The students have been trained to hunt using giant black swans, but Carmen has discovered a dragon. All she has to do is get on his back.

One problem: he's killed everyone who gets near him.

Then the Emperor declares war on assassins. And there might be a traitor among them.

Carmen wants to graduate. But the emperor wants her dead. Her classmates might, too. Graduation night is about to become the fight of her life.

In this heartstopping adventure by Arthur Slade, listeners will root for Carmen - an Assassin with a heart of gold, determined to follow her dream against all odds.

The story is well written with love, betrayal, friendship, honor, trust with mission accomplishment. Bracks is good comic relief.

I got this on a whim but so glad I did. A fast paced action adventure with an assassin with nothing to loose and a dragon who is an exile in everything but name. Lots of witty humor, full of plot twists, and a zany back and forth between a dragon and an assassin. Overall a good read/listen, I'm looking forward to the next novel.

All I see is a Person who is shunned and judged Mr. slade helped me to realize that I’m not alone and to all the people criticizing this story I hope you realize that it’s not just the story it’s the meaning

Keep going

Ever sine I was a girl I always enjoyed magic fantasy stories. Dragons are the ultimate. The story is so captivating and the narrator did a fantastic job. Each character was distinctive. I fell in love with the characters. It had the right mount of mystery, and I love the development of the characters. I'm looking forward to the next one.

Couldn't stop listening

A mostly enjoyable young adult fantasy novel. The “assassin” discipline of the protagonists seems tacked on for marketing purposes as the story would have made more sense given how the heroes behave if they had been practitioners in pretty much any other craft. And the two acts at the end that would almost certainly count as crimes against humanity under modern international law but are somehow passed off as benevolent are problematic. But other than that, it’s a mostly fun fantasy romp that is performed acceptably well.

Decent enough

I loved the first-person perspective writing of this book. It shows the limited view of Carmen, without making her either too blinded or too knowledgeable.
I love how small things throughout the book are carried consistently as the story progresses. Things like that unlocking spell, Carmen’s love of reading, Brax’s sense of humor, etc.

Enjoyed it!
