Publisher's summary

Audio edition of the first book in the popular Dragonback science fiction series from Hugo Award-winning author Timothy Zahn.

Timothy Zahn has been entertaining science fiction readers young and old for more than twenty years with exciting, thought-provoking adventures. Dragon and Thief is sure to delight all his fans and gain new teen and adult readers as well.

Jack Morgan has been framed for theft. He's hiding on a distant planet with the virtual presence of his deceased Uncle Virge, a con man who has been his only family since Jack's parents died. Jack knows he must clear his name before the cops catch up with him. A firefight among ships in the skies above leaves a downed ship near Jack's hiding place, with a single unlikely survivor. It looks like a dragon, and it must join with a human host within six hours or die. The only available host is Jack.

Draycos, Jack's new companion, is a K'da, a dragon-like species that lives symbiotically with the humanoid Shontine. The attackers, determined to exterminate Draycos's people, will find them if they don't flee; so the pair works together to escape the planet and begin a search for the truth behind Jack's frame-up and the identity of the attackers.

With Jack's future hanging in the balance, as well as the future of billions of Draycos's people, the pair must track down the people who framed Jack, and prevent the destruction of the remaining K'da and Shontine. They'll also discover whether their union was mere coincidence, or a friendship written in the stars. Zahn keeps the story moving at breakneck speed.

An engaging fun book ; narration very good!!

This is a wonderful series by Timothy Zahn that I'm very happy to see begun by Audible. Zahn has created very interesting and engaging characters with surprises and plot twists that made it hard to put the book down. It's a fun read!! The narrator does well, I totally enjoyed This! I really hope Audible continues recording the rest of the seriers with the same narrator!

fun read

The story is interesting. While it has all the elements of a typical science fiction, it is also a mystery. The reader read well, using a variety voices the matched the characters well.

One of the best YA books I've read

I will admit, listening to a female narrator in a book full of male characters (there is literally one named female character and you only see her in the last 10 minutes of the book) was rather jarring, but she quickly showed herself to be a skilled narrator (in spite of some odd pronunciations).

As stated in my headline, this was absolutely one of the best YA novels I've ever read. It completely lacks the usual annoying, arrogant, self-centered protagonist and has a decidedly more complex plot than most YA novels.

I'm more of a fantasy reader, so I was honestly hoping for a bit less Sci-fi and a bit more fantasy (dragon and all). Some aspects of the "Dragon" itself were a little off-putting, but once I got used to the presentment of the creature and the story, I actually really enjoyed it. A lot more than I thought I would.

Just a little more lively narration

Narrator does make a valiant effort to use distinct voices for the characters; however, the narrative (non-dialog) parts of the story sound rather monotone.

Interesting premise. Good book.

I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I was Very sad to see there are not further books in the series on Audible. I'll end up reading them.

I will admit, I am not a fan of the narrator for this book. (Don't get me wrong, she has a good voice... Just don't think this is a good fit for it). The performance was fine, but her voice was too high and feminine for all the gruff males in the book.

Great Story, Poor Narrator Choice

Story is very good, and very clever. My only gripe, and not trying to be rude or diss on Hannah Engel (this is an opinion, not a fact), but I had a hard time with her narration as she struggled to mimic male voices. A relatively small thing, but in a book with only a single female character, who is at the very end, it was a little grating to hear her attempts at sounding like a man. If you can get past that, though, it is a good story; though one you may want to read rather than have Hannah read to you.

Wish there were more

Loved it. I wish all of the books were narrated. The narrator really gives life to the characters.
