About this listen

The debut novel from the acclaimed illustrator - a high fantasy adventure featuring dragons and deadly politics.

Maia and her family raise dragons for the political war machine. As she comes of age, she anticipates a dragon of her own to add to the stable of breeding parents. Her peaceful life is shattered when the Summer Dragon - one of the rare and mythical High Dragons - makes an appearance in her quiet valley. Political factions vie for control of the implied message, threatening her aspirations, her aerie, her entire way of life.

The bond between dragons and their riders is deep and lifelong, and Maia's desire for a dragon of her own to train, ride, fly, and love drives her to take a risk that puts her life at stake. She is swept into an adventure that pits her against the deathless Horrors, thralls of the enemy, and a faceless creature drawn from her fear. In her fight to preserve everything she knows and loves, she exposes a conspiracy, unearths an ancient civilization, and challenges her understanding of her world - and of herself.

I hate to open by refuting the critics, but I know you're scanning for the next good book. You won't like it if you're an incel or if you are bound by religious dogma. For the average reader: you'll get action and meaningful relationships, though I do agree with my opponents that it is a slow burn, If you're looking for the latest Hollywood installment of The Fast and the Furious look elsewhere.

This story uses enticing surface-level action and consequence definitely--and it delivers, but for those who understand more about the world and various philosophies it is a goldmine. It's not just a novel nod to foreign thought though. The main characters really struggle with some of the leaks in the new logic too.

I was glad I took the dive.

Amateurs don't get it.

Any additional comments?

If you're looking for an entertaining and fun fantasy book about dragons, this is a solid choice. My biggest complaint was that main character follows a "female hero doesn't know she's special or valued because of unconvincing self-induced insecurities, but through MANY tears she finally finds confidence after all" trope, which I found tiresome and sometimes bizarrely forced, but I still enjoyed the book. I feel like you can tell it was written by an artist, the strength of the book is the beautiful visualization of dragons, the environment, enemies, customs and ceremonies.

Not amazing, but very entertaining

Maia is constantly meeting and going beyond the expectations of the reader. She is clever, decisive, and compassionate without letting it rule her. She responds to her fears in ways that others would balk at. I’m truly impressed with Lockwood for writing such a captivating story and a main character that stands out because of her strength of character.

A thrilling self-journey

Good first half. Then became painfully slow. Then the end was par for the course. Almost YA, but not quite.

The narrator was fine.

Girl and her dragon...
