About this listen

A best seller in its native Canada, Drunk Mom is a gripping, brutally honest memoir of motherhood in the shadow of alcoholism.

Three years after giving up drinking, Jowita Bydlowska found herself throwing back a glass of champagne like it was ginger ale. It was a special occasion: a party celebrating the birth of her first child. It also marked Bydlowska's immediate, full-blown return to crippling alcoholism.

In the gritty and sometimes grimly comic tradition of the best-selling memoirs Lit by Mary Karr and Smashed by Koren Zailckas, Drunk Mom is Bydlowska's account of the ways substance abuse took control of her life - the binges and blackouts, the humiliations, the extraordinary risk-taking - as well as her fight toward recovery as a young mother. This courageous memoir brilliantly shines a light on the twisted logic of an addicted mind and the powerful, transformative love of one's child. Ultimately, it gives hope, especially to those struggling in the same way.

I had difficulties because of the damage she did while carrying for her new baby but it's true that alcohol brings out the worst in us.

Remarkable writing. I felt all her emotions and was rooting for her to the end. Very accurate picture of what alcoholism does to a person.

I was absolutely captivated by Jowita’s honest, witty, poignant retelling of her personal life story! Thank you for going there. I see me in this, only instead of alcohol, anger, shopping and smoking I have my own list - which includes some of those. I’m cheering you on dear! Thank you for going out on the proverbial limb.

Amazing woman with rare gift!

Thank you so much for sharing your struggle. Addiction is so misunderstood. My husband has been fighting it for years. He hid it so well from me and everyone. Your story is a reminder to anyone who is struggling or knows someone struggling that there is hope. Hang in there. Love those that continue to fail. Educate yourself about addiction. There is a reason. You just might not understand what it is and the addict doesn’t know either. Great book. Thank you again.

Powerful story!

The narrator is alluring and her cadence is calming. So much so, I will look for other stories with her narration regardless of the content. I am not an addict regardless found her writing beautiful. Her description of everyday life and of her infant child is poetic and timeless. I just accidentally stumbled onto this audible and now it is one of my favorites. Bydlowska is BRILLANT
