About this listen

It’s 2788 and only the "handicapped" live on Earth. Eighteen-year-old Jarra is among the one in a thousand people born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Sent to Earth at birth to save her life, she has been abandoned by her parents. She can't travel to other worlds, but she can watch their vids, and she knows all the jokes they make. She's an ape, a throwback, but this is one ape girl who won't give in.

Jarra makes up a fake military background for herself and joins a class of norms who are on Earth for a year of practical history studies excavating the dangerous ruins of the old cities. She wants to see their faces when they find out they've been fooled into thinking an ape girl was a norm. She isn't expecting to make friends with the enemy, to risk her life to save norms, or to fall in love.

I love Janet Edwards. Her books are well written with engaging characters and great storylines. She has created a believable deeply detailed and well realized world of a future set on earth after most of its population has left to settle other planets.

Earth Girl is the story of Jarra, one of the "handicapped", who are unable to live anywhere but earth. I highly recommend it along with Edward's other books. This audioversion is well read by Katherine Littrell who does a great job of voicing Jarra.

I really, really liked this story. It was certainly aggressively colonial, though, which was a bummer. Literally English was the only language spoken by humanity anymore, and any lingual drift was "dialect". Even when it had changed so much that it was mutually incomprehensible, the new language wasn't acknowledged as a language.

The coolest parts of the book were parts that were really different, like how triad marriage was normal.

Great Story, aggressively colonial

First of all, this book is a great example of how authors don't have to follow every trend. There's no "spice", no toxic relationships, no one spewing profanity. Just really great, clean writing! Inventive, interesting, and heartening. I'm recommending this to everyone!! Also the narrator does a lovely job. She's expressive and varied and her accent is engaging.

Loved Every Minute!!
