About this listen

Aliens ripped a hole above Earth, arriving with a massive space station. I sorta figured we'd be enslaved to fight in their wars or exterminated for our resources. Nope. The hip-high Iglax were merchants with ugly squished faces and thick blue fur. While they weren't much to look at, they sure did have some wonderous technology.

Humanity bent over backwards to appease our new merchant overlords. The boorish aliens wanted cheap labor for precious metals, and honestly, I didn't blame anyone for their hunger to be among the stars.

For certain rare metals or special gems, they'd trade tech we could only fathom as magic. Me, I pawned a few things, made some money, then hunkered down to study to prove my worth.

The aliens tested humans on an individual basis for miner rentals. Do well on your pilot test, get a spaceship, sign up with a corp, and you can mine the belt. For a puddle-jumper pilot like me, yeah, I was so interested I became obsessed. When I finally tested, I performed above and beyond, being offered a contract for some better than a miner - Earth's First Starfighter.

Warning: Morally gray MC. There's no graphic sex or harem. No stats, straight Sci-Fi first person space-shooter progression.

Loved this story

I hope Han Yang continues this series, it concluded well, it could easily be a stand alone book but the door was left cracked open for more. The characters we amazing and The world building was so well done, the universe is vast yet I never felt bogged down with useless system information that wasn’t real acne to the story. Lastly Matt and Allie rocked it. Really amazing performances from them.

Han Yang is Dang Good

*Reviceved free copy in exchange for an honest review*

When I first seen this I was a little hesitant because it's not the genre LitRPG or GameLit. This book is straight Sci-Fi Fantasy but anything written by Han Yang I have to read! Still such a great storyteller and always has nice character development. If you want a break from LitRPG, pick up this book and enjoy.

Erratic AF

You really have to pay attention to follow the plot because it moves super fast and jumps from scene to scene with zero transition, zero tone adjustment, zero time gating. It didn't work for me because I listen while I work and I couldn't devote enough attention to keep up with the plot. But if you like fast paced, emotionally detached, erratic action, you might love this adventure.

Sci-fi adventure and humor

Received as an audio review copy from Story Origin, this is an honest review. Narrated by Matt Hicks and Allie Piper, both truly capture the wicked humor and adventure the authors wrote into the book. Everything for Darius from Tennessee changes the moment aliens show up up on Earth's doorstep and alter humanity's future; and for Darius mastering his pilot's test gets him into the stars, mining and making back the huge debt he took on before any profit Darius can pocket. Surviving in every job and even getting several intense battles in against other aliens; Darius discovers humanity was never alone in the universe and even finding friends and little love in a story that will have you laughing and intrigued.

Highly recommended.

Awesome!

Great story that has so much potential. The narration is spot on with both voices, but especially the male voice. His voice suits the MC to a “T” and it really adds to the story. I highly recommend this book and look forward to the second one coming out on audible.

Fun story

I really like this author. Everything I have read or listened from him I enjoyed. This is no different. It was fun and exciting to see humanity step into the wider universe and how the characters grow because of it.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

This book is easily my favorite of Han Yang’s to date! I hate that the story is over for now! I wish I can immediately jump into the next book but I can’t… ***sigh***

Anyway, to describe the story. The blurb does a great job for a start actually. The MC is definitely “grey” and unfortunately, probably displays a majority of humanity. He cares about his and his own. With a “maybe” towards strangers. He isn’t a hero by choice. It was more of an accident most of the time with the occasional choice made because it was mutually beneficial.
However, he also grows as a character. Seeing a crap situation for what it is… the galaxy and their version of a United Nations sucks… it is full of selfish and only slightly less than what might be considered bad people. Who put up an image of something better.
Darius chooses to go beyond his nature to do his best to help a humanity that calls him a “selfish” at the best of times and less than nice things most of the time. Humanity is going to go through some extreme growing pains…! But humanity has faced adversity since before we started recording our history… or at least from what we know of…

For the MC himself, he goes out into the galaxy and makes a name for himself as a spectacular Starfighter that is recognized by many within the GGA (that galactic United Nations I mentioned). He and the woman that partners with him, have some great, dangerous and unique adventures. Growing ever closer. Han does a great job with their relationship development and I am thankful it is present! It adds to the story and enhances it in a way that the typical solo male MC cliche of “I don’t need or want a woman to slow me down!” I find it extremely boring and over done. But at the same time, Han doesn’t let drama between the MC and the romantic interest drown the story!
Okay, enough of that.

The major aspects that made me love this story is the realistic aspects behind the science with how navigating and fighting in space worked. The diversity of species, technology, ship designs, politics and much more indicates how much work Han put into this book. The fact there are many different adventures throughout this book made it more unique and entertaining. There really isn’t an overarching narrative that invades and forces the MC too much. There will always be some but not too much here. It’s character driven and has Slice of Life moments.

Okay, I don’t want to ramble any more. I received a free copy of the audiobook but I read the ebook at the same time. The narrators do an frigging fantastic job together bringing characters to life!

I simply CAN’T recommend it enough! Thank you Han Yang for the amazing adventure! PLEASE write some sequels!
