About this listen

Enlisting was his only ticket out.

Raised fatherless in a galactic Brinktown, Joe Pikeman only ever wanted to escape.

The Galactic Guard offered that escape, with the promise of regular meals to boot. Now Joe is a full Guardsman, with his own ship and a snide partner bot who hates humans almost as much as he hates other bots.

To the pirates he hunts, Joe is known as the Butcher. His bloody reputation has landed him in the center of a sweeping conspiracy that threatens to stamp out the galaxy’s last surviving human settlements.

As Joe races against time to salvage what’s left of his species, one thing becomes crystal clear: You can never escape your past.

It all starts on Earth, humanity’s deserted homeworld....

Utterly bonkers

I first discovered Scott Bartlett through his Ixan universe, hard military SF. I loved it. This was so very different and I loved it even more. An unholy combination of military SF, fantasy, cyberpunk, Marvin the Paranoid Android, Cranky Gandalf, Ready Player One, and the Stainless Steel Rat, this series hit the ground running and never stopped.

I can't describe it with any other word than this: bonkers. Utterly bonkers, and so much fun. Mark Boyett lent his usual gravitas to the proceedings which made it even better. Highly recommended. I hope there's more to come in this universe.

Good Enough

Great narration. Good story. Some lazy writing. Small spoiler: The hero makes it through, well everything, by killing anyone who gets in his way. Then as the bad guy lays at his feet...He lets him go. There are a few places where the author has the hero act out of character just, seemingly to advance the plot. Of course I am only half of the book.

Update: Having listened to more of the book I have something else I do not understand. Not only did the hero chose not to kill the bad guy (really bad) he has since then found out the universe is about to be taken over by that bad guy he hasn't told anyone about it. And he's had plenty of time. Just wierd.

not my favorite

the story was not particularly interesting to me. it just lacked excitement. why is it 300 years in the future we are not living hundreds of years but can fly at ftl speed and can regrow limbs.

Ehh, it’s mostly a defense of Comic-Con’s. At least in the first hour I managed. The guy can write okay.

The author can write okay. But it’s just Comic-Con in space. I hope they come up with more original work. God speed brother.

Another amazing series by Scott

I've been obsessed with Scott's books since I first discovered them in March, and this series is no exception. Scott does an amazing job bringing you into the universe and developing his characters. Any fan or sci-fi should read this. Can't wait to read more of his books!

Mark Boyett does an amazing job narrating the books as usual, an excellent choice I'm happy to see used in all of Scott's books that I've listened to.

I Absolutely Loved This Series!

Since I have read all of Scott's other books with Vin Husher, I at first found myself comparing Joe Pikeman to Vin (who I love as a character). When I realized this, I made a conscious effort to embrace Joe as his own person. When I did this, I found he was every bit as complex and heroic as Vin just in a different way. I found myself completely enthralled by the scope of the story. Bottom line is that this is a fantastic series that I loved. Mark Boyett, has become my favorite narrator as well. He delivers a fantastic performance with a series of nuanced characters.

A future taken to a logical and thought out end

What really amazed me about this book series after I started was that it posited a future galaxy wide collapse that was so both believable and plausible then the author had ready answers to all the small details that nag me in many other series. The story never drags, you are always being feed information, character development and/or battles. This story is protagonist focused aka we rarely get anyone else's POV but that is not to say we never do. It is a very enjoyable adventure.

My only issue with Mark Boyett is I sometimes get flashbacks to other series that he does when I hear him voice certain characters.

Very fun book!

so often you read a book where the antagonist is just great at everything, fights really well, super smart, all the technologies awesome, and the antagonist manages to win the day against all odds. This antagonist is frustratingly bad at everything, but begins to get better as the books go on. but he is definitely not a very smart guy! all the technology is disturbingly lacking, and it actually makes sense. that makes it all the more amazing the protagonist manages to get through some of the stuff he gets through. I'm not going to tell you if he saves the Galaxy or not though! nor will I tell you if the Galaxy actually needs to be saved! you're going to have to find out the answers to those questions for yourself.

Magic + Sci fi

I thought the story for most part was very good but I enjoy space / military sci fi. I don't care for fantasy or magic that much which this book has.
