About this listen

What would you do to change your life? How far would you go? How hard would you fight?

Rather than work his bones into dust toiling away on a barren world, Ryck Lysander chooses to enlist in the Federation Marine Corps.

But as he quickly finds out, this path isn't just a job...it's a calling...and not everyone is suited to wear the uniform.

Like millions before him, Ryck will need to develop discipline, endurance, and strength as he’s pushed to the very limit of what he can do, all to earn his ticket off a baren world and into the stars.

But the price of failure won't just mean going home to work the dirt fields...it could cost him his very life.

The time to stand is now, and Ryck will need every once of willpower to become what the galaxy needs.... He must become a Federation Marine.

From USA Today best sellers J.N. Chaney and Jonathan P. Brazee comes an epic military sci-fi series that is sure to draw you in and never let go. If you're a fan of Sentenced to War, Old Man's War, or Starship Troopers, this is the series for you.

The Sci-Fi book I have been waiting for

What a great story. Very well written and read. The realism comes through. The author definitely did his homework. Great work.

Great book one!!

First, being a prior service member myself, I can tell the author also served. The experiences and the feelings the main character (Rick) has are spot on. About as authentic as a fictional story about a future space Marine story can get.

The story is absolutely fantastic, and I love the main protagonist. He’s quick on his feet, and uses his brain, unlike how some popular portrayals of Marines in some books would show them. I can wait to experience the rest of the series and see where this story goes.

Sean Pratt’s narration is top notch! He does a great job of not going overboard with fancy accents and over the top acting. His story telling is, in a word, perfect. In many more words, when I listen to this audiobook Sean Pratt IS Rick. He becomes the character and I believe every word is from Rick’s point of view. He grabs your attention and doesn’t let go. It’s to the point that I want to make excuses to put off other things just to listen to more of the story. I have now purchased the remaining books in the series, and can’t wait to hear more!

Well told if slow start

Nicely different from the usual fare, but not too different. A good tale told well.

Another hit

Classic Chaney vignette style.
Personable characters in believable situations.
Ryck's growth from boy to adult soldier is perfection.

Good book about future Marines

Military science fiction about Marines starting from boot camp and through the first few deployments. Military background for training is evident as is the attitude captured of Marines

Amazingly accurate military banter

The story was amazing accurate when it comes to military banter amongst service members. The choices faced by the main part are accurate as well. It’s a great story, and I suggest anybody take opportunity to read it.

Predictable but enjoyable

The story was very predictable but there was enough interesting technology described to keep it enjoyable.

Like an old engine in winter, took a bit to warmup

Almost hit the stop a few times, but got to the meat and potatoes at the end.
Different writing style, took some time and rewinding to catch key details buried or very quickly covered.
I am looking forward to the next edition hopefully sooner than later.
If I didn't trust the authors from their past work would have been a hard decision to finish but glad 😊
