From the best-selling author of the Sandman Slim series, a lush, dark, stand-alone fantasy built off the insurgent tradition of China Mieville and M. John Harrison - a subversive tale that immerses us in a world where the extremes of bleakness and beauty exist together in dangerous harmony in a city on the edge of civility and chaos. Wyatt Gwyon's desire to forge is not driven by larceny but from love. Exactingly faithful to the spirit and letter of the Flemish masters, he produces uncannily accurate "originals" - pictures the painters themselves might have envied. In an age of counterfeit emotion and taste, the real and fake have become indistinguishable; yet Gwyon's forgeries reflect a truth that others cannot touch - cannot even recognize.

When anthropology professor Gideon Oliver is offered a teaching fellowship at US military bases in Germany, Sicily, Spain, and Holland, he wastes no time accepting. On his first night, he is forced to fend off two desperate, black-clad men who have invaded his Heidelberg hotel room with intent to kill. And then there are a few trivial details that the recruiting agency forgot to mention - such as the fact that the two previous holders of the fellowship both met with mysterious ends.

You probably haven't noticed them. But they've noticed you. They notice everything. That's their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers' work habits. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. They're heisters.

Archeological Adventure in 1960's Egypt
It is easy to see the flashes of Chrichton brilliance in these early stories. His research into history is remarkable, the characters are believable, and often funny, and the story is tight and loaded with enough suspense to keep the reader interested. Very well done and thoroughly enjoyable. Also Christopher Lane is one of the best narrators I've had the pleasure of listening to.

Good early Crichton novel
While the ending could have been better, you can start to see the mature Crichton here. The story was interesting and reasonably fast paced. The characters were generally believable. Overall this was an enjoyable listen.

Good Listen
This was my first Michael Crichton novel and didn't find it as adventurous as I'd hoped (not like the movie Jurassic Park based on his book). The beginning got off to a slow start for me. However, I loved the details about the Egyptian tomb and wound up engrossed in the story. I kept waiting for one of the characters to betray another and it never happened, which was a nice change of pace. The ending was pleasantly unexpected and I ended the novel with a smile. I enjoyed it enough to try another.

Fun story
Any additional comments?
I thought I'd try this early effort by Michael Crichton, writing as John Lange, and was pleasantly surprised by how it kept my interest. The characters are really fun and enjoyable. I loved the story of a group of misfits secretly excavating a undiscovered pharaoh's tomb in Egypt. The details were well done and believable. Of course, the real plus was the narrator, Christopher Lane, who always brings the characters to life. His portrayal of the wealthy, but kooky English benefactor sounded like Michael Caine which fit the character perfectly. Great twist at the end and a fun adventure throughout.

there's no ending to the story, unbelievable!
I've listened to this 3 times, and cannot make any sense of the ending, nor does anyone in inline reviews of the book. I get the feeling Crichton just got digusted with thw work, and bailed out on the ending, or maybe just had to get on with a better book he was dreaming up. the performance captures the 1970's groovy swag very well, a pleasant listen lacking a conclusion.

A great short read!!
I am ashamed with myself for not having read Crichton’s earlier work. This was honestly a well done book and the narrator did one heck of a job. Made the characters easy to notice and more entertaining. Alan Conway in particular. Highly recommend this book.

Easy Go not what I was expecting
This was a good book but I only gave it three stars overall because it was not your usual Michael Crichton book. It was one of his earlier books and if you are looking for something along the lines of James Bond or Clive Cussler you will love it because that is the mark it hits. As I was looking for more sify than anything else it left me wanting more. I would definitely encourage everyone to read this book and the narrator is very very good just know it is not typical Crichton.
