About this listen

When Cheryl and her fiancé, a soldier who has just gotten back from Afghanistan, are on their way back to Denver after a reunion camping trip in the mountains, she hears that an epidemic has spread like wildfire. She has no idea that just a few hours later her life will be threatened by hoards of "Eaters", the infected whose lust for rotten food quickly turns to an insatiable desire for human flesh once their corpses are reanimated.

Cheryl witnesses the best and worst of human nature as she and a group of refugees struggle to stay alive. What will she have to do to survive in this new dark world?

Editorial reviews

The first book in Michelle DePaepe's Eaters series introduces Cheryl, a young woman who is celebrating the return of her fiancé, Mark, who has been stationed in Afghanistan. After a camping trip in Denver, they hear of an epidemic spreading throughout the country, turning people into insatiable "Eaters" who have developed a taste for human flesh. It isn't long before Mark is infected, and Cheryl must find a way to survive the zombie attacks on her own. Heather Jane Hogan gives a subtle and nuanced performance, affecting an eerily calm style that creates an unsettling tone for this unnerving novel.

Older Zombie Entry

Pretty good entry. Good character development with a few unique plot twists. Narration was a little above average. The main drawback is that there is no follow-up book. There was a decent ending, but it was obviously meant to be a series. So, you will be frustrated when you reach the end.

Really not worth the read

It's not TERRIBLE, but neither is it engaging or exciting. The character development is weak, the story line lacks the urgency and terror of a good zombie novel. By the end of the book I felt disappointed by the formulaic plot, and the uninspired narration. I found my mind wandering to other things while listening to this book, which never happens in a truly well written, gripping book.

Sucks

What disappointed you about Eaters?

Story line rather simple and cliche'. Some parts of story don't make sense. Not much expression from narrator. Sounds like she reading a fairy tail. Some parts of story sound like one of those romance novels. Don't quite work in a zombie novel. The entire book felt like it was made because the author wanted to jump on the band wagon of the zombie genre craze.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not one by this author.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

Waste of time. Only finished it because I paid for it.

First Zombie book I skipped to the end

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This book focus way too much on the details of the chase. I know a girl being chased down by monsters, constaintly may sound suspense full but after the fourth time you realize that it is most unlikely that the main character will be killed. So you end up just listening to the author as she writes about how inch by inch the Zombie moves towards the main character.
The story lacks a basic flow or a steady process. Even choas can be described in a orderly fashion. This would just happen without any real explaination or rational, which caused me to question the thought process of this story. There were times when the Zombies would just appear for no reason other then to give the reader a sense of drama. Lets take for example when they were in the ISOLATED cabin in the woods. It only took a day and there were around a hundred of zombies at their place trying to get to them. That does not make sense and seems more like a plot hole.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I am waiting for the last book in the Morningstar Strain series to go autobook.

Did Heather Jane Hogan do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Jane did fine, it is not her fault that the book is under par.

What character would you cut from Eaters?

The main character.

WTG - I really enjoyed this book

I have to say - I was a bit skeptical - but I listened to this in a day and a half while at work, this is a great novel, her desriptions of the eaters in certain situations, I could really picture it - its not the every day Zombie Blood Gore book, but seriously - very well thought out, very descriptive and realistic to a point!! WTG Ms. DePaepe - I look forward to book 2 - hopefully

Are you kidding me ?

The main character Cheryl was the dumbest person ever !! She should have been killed off in the first sentence of the book. Every time she was told her about the zombie apocalypse she would say that can't be true when they said run she would say why or stand paralyzed until someone says run idiot. (I added the idiot lol) Who falls asleep at a fountain in the middle of town in the middle of a zombie apocalypse? Idiot Cheryl !!! This was not a good story made no sense whatsoever and it ended as if the writer didn't know how to end it so she had Cheryl make one of her stupid declaration and it ended. Dumb, dumb, dumb!! I want my money back . I have read many really good zombie apocalypse books but this isn't one of them. Please don't write a second book I could less what happens to these characters or this story.

Not worth the credit

I purchased this book hoping for a great story. I've listen to many zombie books, first one by accident, and have more or less enjoyed the plot. This book seems to be written without any sequential planning, the main character lacks common sense, zombies appear and disappear without warning, the whole thing is like a circus. The narrator is trying to "keep the book alive" but is impossible. I spent the first three hours of listening trying to "get somewhere", hoping for something, three hours later the book turned into a zombie, I had to "delete" it to avoid further damage.
