About this listen

From the best-selling author of the Netflix original movie The Silence comes a brand-new horror eco-thriller.

Earth’s rising oceans contain enormous islands of refuse, the Amazon rainforest is all but destroyed, and countless species edge towards extinction. Humanity’s last hope to save the planet lies with the Virgin Zones, 13 vast areas of land off-limits to people and given back to nature.

Dylan leads a clandestine team of adventure racers, including his daughter Jenn, into Eden, the oldest of the Zones. Jenn carries a secret - Kat, Dylan’s wife who abandoned them both years ago, has entered Eden ahead of them. Jenn is determined to find her mother, but neither she nor the rest of their tight-knit team are prepared for what confronts them. Nature has returned to Eden in an elemental, primeval way. And here, nature is no longer humanity’s friend.

I really enjoyed this story

I love the fact that the people of earth gave these large areas of land back to the animals and I loved the storyline and characters and the narration well done

That narrator

I can't accurately review this. The story maybe really really great. I'm just struggling with this narrator. Her speaking style is chopped at some points, it sounds like they recorded it one sentence at a time at points. Long periods of monotone reading and hard to differentiate between characters.
I've never reviewed mostly based on narration or when I was only halfway through. This one I just had too

Wonderful!

This book is fantastic and creative. Will definitely have a permanent home in my library the world building as well as suspense and horror in this novel are everything I could’ve hoped for and more definitely give a read. The narrator can take a little bit to get used to but once you adjust I think that she fits the story very well and does it good justice

Story Fantastic; Narrator Great but annoying!

This story is really good! Combines lots of elements in a fast-paced, gory horror sci-fi story!
Narrator has some of the best character voices I've ever heard!--however, when she would say "He said" or "She said", etc, she would do so in such an awful, unnatural and annoying manner that it was horribly distracting several times per paragraph! NO ONE says those phrases that way!! The editor should have pointed this out! It's as if the narrator pre-recorded her self saying those phrases on their own, out of context and out of the flow of the story at the moment they appear in the text! It is robotic, inflection is all wrong and horribly distracting! GOD! WHY do editors and authors allow work to be screwed up like that!?

Contemplating taking a loss...

I'm not even 5 minutes in and thinking about taking a loss on this purchase because of the horrible narration.

disjointed narration

the character voices were good, but each time the narrator had to say something like "Jen said", it was very disconnected. I think it turned me off the plot, as it was just ok.

I’ve never taken the time to review...

But I’m compelled to warn other listeners. I’ve not gotten very far in yet, so in fairness I can’t review the story, but the narrator is absolutely awful. It is so bad that it is completely distracting from the story itself. What were “they” thinking?! May have to return if I cant get past it.

Not the right narrator for the genre

I was looking forward to this book because I loved Annihilation and was expecting something similar (interesting eco sci-fi lore and world building). I am sad to say that I am very disappointed. The story is boring, nothing significant happens until the last 3 hours of the audiobook. The main character, Jenn, is pointless and doesn't serve any purpose. She does literally nothing for the story. In fact, none of the characters is anything close to endearing. They are all so boring and lifeless. The whole idea of Eden and virgin zones don't even matter as there is no clever exploration or story behind them besides it being cut off from human civilization. I can't help but feel like it's a wasted potential.

As for the narrator, I don't think she's bad on her own. Her diction is clear and she has a pleasant enough voice. However, it feels to me that she is better suited for a different genre of story. She can't seem to express the mood of the scenes very well from this book. Even during high tension scenes, she somehow sounds so bored. I am also very distracted by the characters accents and male voices that she tries to do.

Save your credit for something else. This audiobook isn't worth the time.

DNF

The reading cadence is distractingly repetitive. I couldn’t finish the first chapter.

I only rated the story at all because it’s a required field. Maybe it’s very good, I don’t know. I hope so. I’ll seek out a paper copy.
