About this listen

The homicide cop with a passion for justice returns in the captivating crime thriller series by the #1 New York Times bestselling author.

It was a glittering event full of A-listers, hosted by Eliza Lane and Brant Fitzhugh, a celebrity couple who’d conquered both Hollywood and Broadway. And now Eve Dallas has made her entrance—but not as a guest. After raising a toast, Fitzhugh fell to the floor and died, with physical symptoms pointing to cyanide, and the police have crashed the party.

From all accounts, he wasn’t the kind of star who made enemies. Everyone loved him—even his ex-wife. And since the champagne cocktail that killed him was originally intended for Eliza, it’s possible she was the real target, with a recently fired assistant, a bitter rival, and an obsessed fan in the picture. With so many attendees, staff, and servers, Eve has her work cut out determining who committed murder in the middle of the crowd—and what was their motivation. As one who’s not fond of the spotlight herself, she dreads the media circus surrounding a case like this. All she wants is to figure out who’s truly innocent, and who’s only acting that way…

There is never enough

Maybe it’s because I was immersed in the details, but this book felt abridged. Maybe it’s because Nora has created an extended family of Roark’s and Eve’s with 55 prior books, that we only visit in February and September with new books, but we didn’t get these extended family visits. Did Mavis have baby #2? What does her reno look like? Did Peabody order the lamp she liked? Feeny? How is Somerset ok? Is McNab planning to propose to Peabody at a Mavis party? In this book, Somerset reminds me of a butler rather than Roarke’s chosen family because there was no dialogue outside of the witty repartee at the door.

How about an “encore” with these and more updates set when Eve and Roark return from vacation. It can be attached as a link this spring in Nora’s Newsletter. Love this series.

Missing layers

Took me awhile to settle into the story and I kept wondering, “where is Roarke?” Good story and good twist but jd Robb usually weaves in some other intrigues below the murder case. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book.

Losing the intensity

Susan Erickson was amazing as always

I absolutely love the In Death series and JD Robb is an amazing author. However, I feel the last couple of books, have lost the excitement and the intensity that was the draw in the beginning of the series. So many of the characters we love were missing from this book .

The book I've been waiting for.

Personal relationships have been creeping into Eve's world, and we've seen a change in crimes as Eve's world opened up. This book was a pure balance between personal and murder. I didn't figure out who did it until about the time Eve did. That is something that rarely happens. I am impressed with the way the whole book was written. I'm not going to give anything away. I'll just say I enjoyed every misdirected minute. Narration was spot on as usual. Roark has matured. If possible, he's more steady and relaxed. Peabody is becoming secure in her world, and she's learning. My only statement is that...Mavis needs that statue! Highly recommend this book.

Solid book

I enjoyed this latest instalment. There was some great banter, lots of excellent references to past cases/books, some great house updates, and some wonderful personal developments.

All in all a good read, but it probably won’t end up on my personal top 10 of the series.

Best series ever

Don’t listen to the negative comments. Another great In Death story. Just the simple fact that over 60 novels later these stories are still relevant, well written with the right balance of serious crime and lots of funny moments. Can’t wait for the next one!!
