Publisher's summary

After dumping her cheating fiancé and canceling the wedding, Mallory Shepard can't bear another disaster. So when the former bride-to-be unexpectedly inherits Thistle Park, a ramshackle mansion in her ex's hometown of Port Quincy, it's a problem she can't afford - literally. It’s full of stray cats, peeling wallpaper, and nosy neighbors, and Mallory is dying to sell it off - once she finally fixes up both the place and her messy life.

Then it turns out that Thistle Park has its charms. But the honeymoon phase is abruptly cut short when an unwanted visitor is found dead on the front lawn. Enlisting the help of her sister Rachel, Mallory vows to unveil the killer before she herself becomes married to the suspect list.

What is with the narration?

The overall story was entertaining, and the protagonist is relatable. However, I’m not sure what is going on with that narration. It’s absolutely strange. The voice she uses for the protagonist sounds breathy, lazy, and aloof. It almost sounds like she’s trying to do a whispery bedroom voice at times/ like she’s out of breath from walking at others/ and emotionless still at others. It was so odd and distracting. I want to continue with this series, but I’m not sure I can bare this narration. It seems to me that the author created a lively, fun, relatable, and upbeat protagonist, but the narrator takes these qualities from her.

Cozy with a bit of grit

Wow, the narrator is excellent. There are multiple story lines that keep the novel fresh and intriguing. The characters are varied and the main character's adjustment to the new town and it's inhabitants is well done and brings the reader along in a realistic way. Despite being a cozy the novel avoids a lot of cozy cliches which I appreciated. The main character has a brain and common sense.
