About this listen

Play Poker Like the Pros is the perfect introduction to the world of poker, including tournaments, home games, and online play. Hellmuth begins by explaining how to set up and play the games and then moves on to basic and advanced strategies.

You'll learn exactly which hands to play, when to bluff, when to raise, and when to fold. In addition, Hellmuth provides techniques for reading other players and avoiding "going on tilt" - poker speak for staying cool under pressure. There are also special chapters for advanced players on how to beat online games and an inside look at tournament play.

I learned a few very useful things from this book.

After the hold em section, it lost my interest. Not because I don't care about other styles of poker; it is just the rules being explained in the most basic of ways while being such similar games, would tune me out. then even as I ffwd, I find myself listening to quick hand reviews that were just hard to follow or keep my attention.

I did, however learn one of the best lessons in poker through this book. i use it all the time and has made me a much better player. Obviously worth a read.

Limit Hold 'em Bible

I've played poker with friends for decades and this is by far the best and clearest book on hold 'em strategy I've ever read--and I have a pile of well-reviewed poker books. It can be difficult to follow on audiobook at times because of the nature of describing hands and strategy, but the concepts are rock solid. I've listened to it perhaps six or more times and each time it sunk it a little deeper. Although he presents his beginner/intermediate/advanced guidelines, the discussion of why he's doing it and how to think about the game are just as valuable. My poker buddies are smart and experienced and this has helped me to be at and sometimes above the general level of the game. I happen to like his narration style as well, so the audiobook has that advantage over the hard copy as well.

I was left wanting more

This is my first review so hope it comes out ok .. and please forgive the spelling and grammar as I read books I don't compose or write to any great degree of skill.
I have been playing poker for some 35 years now and have played every where from the kitchen table, and in dark back rooms of bars, to Casinos , and online.
So I figure I know the game well enough to comment on this book somewhat.
I am a big fan.... ( much to the chagrin of my poker buddies ) of Phil Hellmuth and his style of play.
I found this book to be easy to follow and interesting from the standpoint of that, I am a fan of phils and interested in how he approaches the game .
With that said , I found the theory and strategies he relayed in the book to be very basic and nothing new to an experianced player and was geared to the novice player.

So if you are an experianced player and not a fan of phils I would pass .. But if you are new to the game and looking to learn some basic strategies and plays then this is a good choice for you.

First Poker book I've ever read

Like the title says this is the first poker book ive ever read. Years ago. I would suggest him taking the sections out with shout outs to Ultimate Bet.com Which was full of super users and scammed many out of their money!
However, as far as a good poker book to get your feet wet this one works well to help you understand the basics and how to be aggressive and use your chips correctly at the table.

Boring.. nothing new here.

What would have made Play Poker Like the Pros better?

To give insights and tips that one can't find by just doing a quick search on the web.

What was most disappointing about Phil Hellmuth’s story?

It just drones on and on and doesn't hold your interest. I almost returned this book but did n't in fairness to Audible given the reasonable price of it.

What didn’t you like about Phil Hellmuth’s performance?

Same as the last question. It just drones on and on and doesn't hold your interest. The tips Phil gives can be found by reading any poker related site on the web. Nothing new to learn here.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

No redeeming qualities at all so far as I'm concerned.

Any additional comments?

Look elsewhere for Poker playting tips. Phil Hellmuth isn't the answer. You'll get better value on Poker Sites that have player forums and it won't cost you a cent or a credit.
