About this listen

After a recent string of disappearances in a small Connecticut town, a grieving widower with a grim secret is drawn into a dangerous ritual of dark magic by a powerful and mysterious older gentleman named Heart Crowley. Meanwhile, a member of local law enforcement tasked with uncovering the culprit responsible for the bizarre disappearances soon begins to learn of a current of unbridled hatred simmering beneath the guise of the town’s idyllic community—a hatred that will eventually burst and forever change the lives of those who once found peace in the quiet town of Henley’s Edge.

From the Bram Stoker Award®-nominated author of the viral sensation Things Have Gotten Worse Since We Last Spoke, Everything the Darkness Eats is a haunting supernatural thriller from a new and exciting voice in genre fiction.

Critic reviews

"The cosmic horrors and seemingly idyllic setting of Henley’s Edge feel like Stephen King in his prime [...] Throughout the novel, André Santana’s narration breathes life into all the characters, particularly likable everyman Ghost and seductively sinister Crowley."—Library Journal

the narrator was good, I enjoyed his performance and it fit the story. you can only work with what you get, though.

if you're into unrealistic melodrama, this is the one for you. I like fiction, but the discrepancies between real life occurrences and how they occur in this story are distracting (to be nice about it).

Huh

I’m a huge fan of the author, so I was excited for this, but it really wasn’t what I expected. Like others have said, it feels like 2 different stories that are vastly different. Also the second storyline with the homophobes got really uncomfortable and extreme to the point of hopelessness.

Though I will give the author credit for how these scenes were written. The language makes it easier to stomach than a more visceral description and the scenes don’t go for too long like some of the retellings of true crimes that I’ve read. I also appreciated the ending because otherwise this book would have been really sad.

Overall, unfortunately, this one was a miss for me. I appreciate the author’s ability to push the envelope, but the story felt incredibly disjointed and the very different tones bothered me.

Left looking for more, not in a good way

A decent premise of a story but overall it fell short for me. The narration was well done so there’s that. I kept wanting more from the plot and it simply wasn’t there. It seemed like 2 separate stories that were jammed together in the last 10 minutes just for the sake of trying. Though if either one of the stories were expanded upon it would be decent

Immensely dark. Don’t believe the negativity.

This was a densely dark book. Nothing is off the table for this writer, and he puts his characters through the most trauma I’ve encountered in a book in years. However, the reviews criticizing his writing style are pretty pompous. The story moves fast and is incredibly interesting. Well developed characters and well structured chapters made me fly through this.

Definitely recommend.

Great horror!

Excellent horror. intense, supernatural, sometimes gory, the right amount of brutal. if you enjoy Ania Ahlborn, you will probably like this.

2 different books

However certain parts are very graphic. It was a very hard book to finish , if it was in paper back I wouldn’t have .
