About this listen

Mary DiNunzio has been slaving away for the past eight years trying to make partner in her cutthroat Philadelphia law firm. She's too busy to worry about the crank phone calls she's been getting, until they fall into a sinister pattern. The phone rings as soon as she gets to work then as soon as she gets home. Mary can't shake the sensation that someone is watching her, following her every move. The shadowboxing turns deadly when her worst fears are realized and she has to fight for something a lot more important than partnership...her life.©1993 Lisa Scottoline (P)2004 HarperCollins Publishers, Inc. Critic reviews

"Lawyer Scottoline's first novel is an engaging, quick read, sprinkled with corny humor and melodrama in just the right proportions." (Publishers Weekly)

Needs to be unabridged

Never read or listened to anything by this author before. I really enjoyed this book, what there was of it.

Strong Story, Well Performed.

I've read about half a dozen of Lisa Scottoline's books, and when I had a chance to snap up this first book on audio, I did so. To my surprise, it turns out that Mary DiNunzio, a character that repeats in many of the Scottoline books, was in her first book, as was Judy Carrier.

This is a different Mary than the one you see in later books - she's working for the big powerful firm, on the side of money, not the side of right, and she's trying to make partner. Her conscience bothers her sometimes, but since her husband's death, she has thrown herself into work, and is doing well. She doesn't even have time to worry about the hangup calls she's getting. Or the notes.

But things turn sinister, and soon Mary realizes that she's got someone who is really after her, and it may go as far back as her husband's death, which was ruled an accident, but now she's not sure.

Paced well, read superbly, this was a nice chance to step back and see where an author began. It'll keep you guessing, right until the end.

loved it!

loved it! good character development. Surprising turns are evident retrospectively but not predictable & not off-the-wall for effect only. Dynamics of the story are all interesting individually. Writing style and expression (analogies, verbiage, etc) make for vivid imagery.

Abridged -- A Jumble of Plot Lines -- Not a Story!

One thing abridged versions have going for them. . . they are short. But that does not diminish the pain of enduring a story that just didn't fit together. Let's see, smart lawyers, insane judges, twin sister in a convent, etc. etc. etc. Maybe the unabridged version is better, although I don't think that even an additional 3-5 hours could make this a five star book.

I'll give another Scottoline book a try, but only unabridged.

Nice to read a series set in Philly

I had family in South Philly growing up; Mary DiNunzio reminds me of my cousins and their friends.

No reasonable doubt

Characters are not super heros or always on top. Story line is not cookie cutter or 'hoky'. I have no reasonable doubt that I may have just found another favorite author....

Legal Thriller?

If you're looking for a Grisham thriller, this doesn't quite cut it. A decent story, but much more about personal drama and romance than legal thrills.

Review

This was an abridged version. I prefer unabridged versions. And I would like a way to return it when you're finished listening
