About this listen

Jamie is a young veteran with a painful history, most of which he'd rather forget. He tried to escape to a familiar place, but with a new job. A new life, really. In his mind, it was simple. He was done battling for others. The end.

It was a great plan...right up to the whole "fight for your life in a mini-mart" thing. Without warning, Jamie is attacked by a sword-wielding man and warned to stay away. From what, he's not sure.

Unexpectedly, he is invited to join a covert band of brothers that fights to keep these evil beings called Malum at bay. To accept their invitation is to add death matches against evil to his resume. To decline is to live...at least for a while.

Kate is a beautiful barista and an important member of this undercover organization. She just might have the key to victory over the Malum, but is kidnapped before she can tell what she knows. Everything hinges on a timely rescue of Kate as Jamie's past and present collide.

Now an evocatus, a veteran called again to duty, Jamie must decide how far he's willing to go to fight - and love - again.

A little to much inner monologue for my taste but i still loved it. the inner monologue worked for this story and this character. loved the mixed of old war new war. our world their world. all around great 1st book in what i hope will be atleast a trilogy

4/5 stars (3.5/5 if you want to get technical)

3/5 story; performance 4/5
Narrated by Andre Santana

Summary:
Jamie a veteran with a painful past finds out he has the ability to fight demon-like creatures in an alternate world.

Additional Comments:
- 2.5/5 stars Main Character: Jamie’s okay. But he has the inner voice of a teenage girl. These types of stories (naïve character finds out they have great power and has to learn it fast to save the world) work well with that voice, but that creates a disconnect here where the MC is supposed to be a warrior sort. In most books, the MC is actually a 17/18 year old girl. With a few tweaks, this book could have been exactly that. There are some great lines. I think “man swoon” was my favorite. It was really hard to pin down what Jamie’s old job was. First, I just got air force, then I got rescue jumper. His “new” job is as a mechanic.
- 4/5 stars Christian influences: there are subtle Christian influences. The fighters are humans, only special humans. They function more like angels though.
- 3.5/5 stars Plot: Decent good vs. evil sort of story. It’s a nearly endless cycle of they train, they get in trouble, they do the exact same sort of training, and they get in trouble again. You’d think they’d tweak their training modules with that much trouble. There are a few very touching points.
- 3.5/5 stars side characters: Kate’s okay, but she’s kind of just there to be kidnapped. There’s a cool moment at the end, but it’s hard to balance hours upon hours of near uselessness. The other characters are okay
- 4/5 stars Performance: The performance is decent. It’s true to the manuscript, though I still think the character comes across as odd because of what the narrator was given to work with.

Conclusion:
The book would have probably worked better with the MC being a teenage girl, but it was okay overall. It had some amusing points and some touching points.

A well told imaginative tale

From the beginning this story caught my attention. André Santana captures the essence of Jamie so well that he pulls your attention into the story from the first beat. And from there, it just keeps getting better!
